Erin handed her his napkin, which'd have to do until the server came back out with the towel. "Nah, don't worry about it." A second later he cursed himself; if he'd agreed, that meant he'd be seeing her again.

The server came back out as she was trying to rub off the sauce from Erin's coat sleeve. She peered up at him, almost thoughtfully, watching him as well as she could from where she could see him. Then the server vanished and left them, for the most part, alone.
Malika could hear really no French being spoken in the entire restaurant. They might as well have been alone.
"...Why did you come to France from America?" she asked, after a moment, pulling her food towards her and taking the chopsticks out of the paper wrapper. "Don't they have circuses all over the place there? Or are you touring?"

"Uh." Erin took the first bite of his curry to buy himself time. Truthfully, he'd just gone to bed one night and woke up in a back alley here, but- "I just wanted to come here. I took French in school, so." Lucky break it'd been for him, too.

"Oh, well. That sounds better." She looked almost relieved. "I'm not sure I could handle someone actually in showbiz for, you know, showbiz purposes."

"No. It's just a job." It didn't require much thought and Erin got free food from the circus equivalent of a cafeteria. He also got to spend as much time as he wanted in form- it could be worse. "What do you do?"

Fleeting thoughts, none of them useful.
"Oh - I - " She let herself be embarrassed; it was difficult. All she wanted to do was wear a blank face. "...Hm. Inheritance," she finally admitted, with a sort of "well - there it is" gesture with one hand. "And investment. Though I'm thinking of journalism. I like to read, but I don't like to only read."

She did get a blank look of her own; Erin had no idea what she meant. Then this expression changed to a more dubious one- did she know how vague she was being? Something illegal, perhaps? Erin didn't press, although he did comment, "You write?"

"Not really," she said with a laugh. "It's never occurred to me that would get in the way, though. "I mostly read, you know, financial journals. I've done pretty well in stocks. But I, hm. I didn't go to college, so it's, I guess you could say, a talent in the rough?"
((...she was being vague?))

He shrugged. "Sounds possible to me. I don't think it matters what your form's like, as long as you get down the pertinent things. Pretty sure journalism works the same way."
(( Seemed so to me. I would never get those references. ))

She smiled almost shyly at him. "Thanks for the vote of confidence. I was always a good student in school," she mused.

Erin studied her. "Yeah? What'd you like best, then?"

"Hmmm. I think I was most interested in current events, but that wasn't actually a subject. You?"
Malika didn't remember liking it. It had been the working and being good at everything that had been important.

He flashed her a wry smile. "P.E." Erin hadn't really liked school that much. "But I wasn't bad at science, either, I guess. I liked Biology."

"Science," said Malika, pointing a chopstick at him. "You know what you're talking about."
French school was notoriously harder than American, but Malika had technically never passed, as it was a few weeks before the final exam - the big one, the BAC - that her father had tried to sell her in marriage to a much older man.

He was nearly finished with his curry, his mouth burning in a pleasant sort of way. He'd eaten very fast, and he was still hungry from an entire day of staying in form; he had a lot of energy to make up for. Erin contemplated dessert.
"I like to think so. Then again, it's not much use in life now."
