Alex' alarm was very apparent. Armand didn't comment, but he did smile at it. He led Alex off the bridge and down the banks of the river, his petite figure occasionally outlined by a street-side lamp against the dark. There were far less people here than on the bridge, and even less on the street as they went; it was late, after all, and many people walked fast, not looking up, as they hurried to reach their destinations.
(( Sorry it took me so long to post. ^_^ ))

((No problems! I like your Armand. )) Alex followed along quietly, wondering about the conversation ahead. Even with his trepidation, he was curious as to what Armand was after--or, what the older vampire didn't know. Alex had no knowledge, of course, of Armand's amnesia and hadn't an inkling that he simply might not remember anything.

(( He's getting harder and harder to play. ;_; ))
And then, eventually, Armand stopped. He turned his head towards Alex, looking past him back at the lights that crossed the river from the bridge as though gauging their distance from the busiest avenue. "Isn't there anywhere else you'd rather go?" he asked, his eyes turning on the younger vampire- and the thing was, his gaze was no different when on Alex than when dispassionately watching the avenue from afar.
To be honest, Armand had not yet decided on his approach with Alex. Alex knew Daniel - slight pang of, no, not jealousy- and knew Armand. The old Armand... or the new one? A version of him, at least, and so Armand did not know quite how to handle him. It was one thing to talk of this situation, his amnesia, with David, and another to speak of it with a stranger who felt barely older than a fledgling. Armand did not know whether to enchant or threaten him; certainly the auburn-haired vampire was capable of both. Sometimes even at the same time.

((Oh no! But I know how difficult canon chars from the VC universe can be. <_<))
I'd rather be with Daniel.
Of course, he didn't say that out loud.
"No...not at the moment."
He wasn't quite sure how to react to Armand. Meeting was like...well, like meeting a legend. You always heard about these vampires, but actually talking to them was a lot different than seeing them in person.

(( Yeah, really. *rolls eyes* ))
Of course, to think it so loud, Alex hardly needed to say it, but Armand had no intention of letting him leave before they'd talked. "You've seen Daniel very recently." A question that wasn't phrased like one. Armand hadn't seen Daniel recently, not at all, only once or twice from a distance since their meeting in the library. That wasn't why he asked, though; he only wondered why Daniel hadn't told Alex this situation, had they met.

"Yes...I talked to him earlier tonight."
No, Daniel hadn't really spoken of Armand, and all Alex knew was what had transpired on Night Island all those years ago. He was woefully behind on things, and had a feeling that was the case.
"I see him most nights."

***NEW DAY****
Water. That was what Sayuri was like, so they had said--strong water, carving a hole through even solid stone, moving with the wind and growing even stronger. Why was it, then, that it was water that had marked the most confusing and tumultuous parts of her life?
She stared down at the cold waters of the Seine this morning, a lone geisha on another bridge far from home. Granted, she was dressed, and she had found time to do her hair, but once again Sayuri was alone in a wide world, and she was distressed; perhaps, though, she coudl avoid tears this time. Who knew? Someone else might even find her here.

*Monsieur le comte, Nicolas Alexandre d'Enjolras, happened to have his office in this part of town. It was only a few arrondissements over from the Place des Vosges, where the family's townhouse was, so he often walked. It was pure coincidence that he decided to take this bridge rather than the equally convenient one a few blocks down.*
*The first thing he noticed about the girl on the bridge was that she was clearly upset. People didn't stare into the waters of the Seine unless they were upset or artists, and she didn't look like the sort of artist who stared into the Seine for inspiration. This would not have been enough to stop him, but immediately afterward he noticed that she was dressed in a kimono with her hair in a fashion that even the most daring ladies of Paris would not attempt. The third thing he noticed was that she had the air of someone who still didn't quite believe where they were--when you lived here long enough, you learned to recognize the signs.*
*He approached, leaning himself on the railing, facing her.*
"Ca va, mademoiselle?"
((Are you alright, miss?))

Art--that Sayuri was familiar with, though the elegant paintings of the past geisha were not for her. Nor did she feel particularly moved to verse by the waters this morning; they were simply another thing that reminded her that she was not at home, and didn't know why. She bowed her head, willing herself not to cry.
Lost momentarily in reflection thus, she nearly jumped when approached, and on turning was struck by the startling sense of déjà vu. Recovering quickly enough, she drew in a breath, assumed proper posture, and bowed in a properly genteel fashion. Really, it was to reassure herself as much as him. "I...am fine, sir," she murmured, for although she wasn't familiar with French, it was fairly obvious what he was asking.

*He switched effortlessly into English upon hearing her response, giving her a small smile.*
"Nobody who is fine stares into the Seine. Are you sure? You seem lost."

Well, there was some truth in the idea that all gaijin spoke English, after all. Reminded even more of that other morning, she shook her head again, to clear it. The smile she offered back in a moment was troubled, as indeed she usually was--men simply failed to notice, particularly when they were gazing at her eyes.
"Well. Yes, I am lost...very much so. I don't think..." Sayuri paused briefly, considering just how the others would react, and how she could be missing her chance! A darker shade of concern passed over her face momentarily.

"But of course I can't expect you to trust a stranger to help you..."
*He swept a swift but gallant bow.* "Nicolas d'Enjolras. Now, where is it you're supposed to be, and how did you wind up on a bridge over the Seine?" *He was direct, but this did not mitigate the kindness in his face.*

Have a little composure! she reminded herself, and collecting herself, she swept her kimono into order around herself, putting on her neutral face, which was still, of course, designed to charm.
Again, she bowed properly in response. "I am known as Sayuri. Perhaps you have been to Miyako?" It was unlikely, but a suggestion never hurt. "Sad to say, I don't know exactly how I came here."

*He broke into an uninhibited smile.* "As it happens, I have. Sadly, my visit was short--I was stationed in Tokyo at the time, with the French navy."

Well, that was a good start. Besides, if she wasn't sure before, she could certainly tell she was in France now. Something, however (besides the question of why she was here at all) bothered her. The French navy? She didn't think that had been in Japan for a long time...certainly not since the Imperial navy had moved near Indochina.
"I hope you enjoyed your time...and, ah, do you have today's date?"
