"Gentle," Phoenix sighed. "I know."
She fell silent, pondering her own influence, and how all her good intentions eroded when she was around either of them.

"Ja" he whispered "und if I do not see him, he vill just stay here and sat is vorse."
What The Emcee was, he had created, his beliefs and way of living were through years of living this lifestyle. He had done many things that went against every way he had been taught as a young man and that way okay, and if he never saw his family again that too was fine.
But he never wanted his brother too see what he had become, he loved himself too much to feel guilt.

"He seems pretty set on seeing you," she agreed. "I'm sorry. Did I do wrong? I couldn't just leave him..."

"He's working at the Opera," Phoenix said, reaching for her costume. She had to go one in a few minutes. Introduce the acts. "In the kitchen."

He nodded "Sen I vill go sere" standing up he pushed his feet in to his boots and laced them up. He was nervous for the first time in years, it wasn't a feeling he was used to.
He looked terrible, rested, but terrible.
He kissed her softly on the cheek and left without a word.

Phoenix sighed as she watched him go. In another time, she'd have gone with him--but this was not her conversation, and she was needed here. He'd put her in charge.
She did hope he went easy on Ben. And that he didn't send his brother... away.
She didn't want to contemplate her flat anymore, without Benno.

**LATER, AFTER A GUIGNOL PRODUCTION**
Phoenix arrived, breathless and almost late. She had to get into costume, make up... and put on a whole new show. Her part at the Guignol had not been huge, but it was still performing. Still giving one's all.
She wondered when she'd know if there was a place for her somewhere other than here. It wasn't that she didn't love the Kit Kat. But Ben had been right, even if he hadn't said anything. She deserved better.

He had watched her come in and seethed, the girls had told him where she had gone, that she was off performing at theater.
How dare she.
He knocked her door loudly, normally he would have walked in, but today he wanted to make sure she knew who she was dealing with.

The knock startled her, though she had no foreboding about the mood or intent behind it.
"Yes?" she called, decent enough for here as she put on her makeup. "It's open."

He pushed through the door and slammed it behind him with a grin "Hallo, Phoenix."

Phoenix looked up, smiling involuntarily at him, though it faded a little when she remembered...
"Hi," she said, not unkindly. The Emcee's grin was not always a good thing--but Phoenix had not really encountered that side of him. "I'll be ready in a minute."

It dawned on Phoenix that the Emcee might be angry. Well--things had been strange since the night in her apartment. It was one of the reasons she'd been avoiding him--and the Kit Kat.
"I was busy," she said, darkening her eyeliner. "I was there yesterday."

He took a step foreward, but it didn't help the dark look on his face "You vere busy? Vat could haf possibly been so important that you couldn't do your jobs?"
