"You look very much like...someone I once knew..." *said Nadir softly, gazing intently at the girl.*

Oh. I'm sorry, I didn't mean to. *Gah. She didn't know why she was actually being pleasant. It wasn't like her at all, and she liked it that way.* She must have been a right bitch, to leave you looking like that at me.

"Not all my memories of her are unpleasant. My regrets are my own fault," *he said with a half-smile, tearing his eyes away from the strangely familiar face and looking again at the fire.* "She was the first woman I ever loved."

*He looked into the fire. Shadi thought it was all very dramatic. And... romantic. She'd had a crush on the doctor, she remembered, but it seemed so trivial now. What had she known of love? How could she understand what this man had gone through? Though, presumably, by his own fault.*
Well. I'm sorry to have reminded you. Also, I'm sorry she looked like me; I mean, it's bad enough there's one of us. I can't imagine what you were thinking.

*Shadi frowned.* Really? You think so? Because... I dunno, I guess I always figured I'd grow up ugly or something. Maybe because I don't have any parents so I don't know what they looked like. *Of course, she dressed better now, what with "modern" fashions and all. And she hadn't bothered to cut her hair in awhile. And Alex had nagged at her to stop being so BLEEPing rude.* I mean, thanks!

*Nadir nodded slowly.* "I lost my parents when I was young, too."

*Shadi resists the urge to tell him that was careless of him. And shrugs.*
I never knew them, so I guess I didn't think about it too much. I mean, maybe they were mean. Maybe they abandoned me on purpose. I suppose I won't ever know, now. I'm sorry it happened to you, too.

*Nadir shrugged, the motion unknowingly identical to hers.* "My mother tried...but she died when I was sixteen. Not so young, I suppose--but anyone can feed and clothe a child. It's those on the the threshold before adulthood that need parental guidance most."

"I guess. I mean, I wouldn't know. I never had any." *Well, there was River, and the Doctor, but mostly she'd learned to be unpredictable and strange from them, which she already, kinda, knew. She flops into another chair, legs over the arm of it.* "I suppose I'm terribly ill-mannered."

"Awesome. I'm just going to have more cookies, then." *This was good. Already, she was getting on better with people since she got back. Not that it was, like, her goal in life. But it sure beat being told to get lost all the time.*

"You don't look that old to me," *Shadi piped up brightly.* "I mean, you're like an adult, but not OLD old. Not like someone's dad or anything. Besides, cookies keep you young!" *Shadi would live on cookies if she could.* "I never had cookies before coming here. I mean, unless I could steal them. People don't throw cookies out in the garbage."
