"Why did he give me to you rather than keep me for himself? Have you done as much for him?"

"I suppose he felt bad about that business with having his baby," Erik said as if this was perfectly natural. "Thought Erik was lonely, or some such, and assuaged his guilt with you. Which, no offense, demonstrates his absolute ignorance of my modus operandi."

*The girl shook off the odd phrasing as a quirk of syntax--here was a man who referred to himself in the third person, after all.*
"None taken. I've no idea what he might have been thinking, either. Certainly the idea has less merit than he intended."

"I am gratified that you agree," he said. "I had a Daae at the time, after all."
His heart still broke at the thought.

"A what?"

"Hmm?" said Erik, lost in his own thoughts. "Oh, yes. Daae. A boy this time, which was odd, but not as much as you might think. Christian. He loved me, you know, but not enough."

"...these...Daaes...the family--they are old acquaintances of yours?"

Erik did not think they were exactly related, though the workings of such things were still unclear to him.
"Not so very old, no," he said. "They are my light, my life, my breath of sunshine," he continued, mixing his metaphors horribly. "And now they are mine no longer."

"...breath...of...sunshine...?"
*Perhaps it was because French English wasn't her mother tongue, but this didn't seem right.*

"Fresh air, sunshine, what does it matter?" Erik spluttered. "I'm here, for good it seems, underground like a toad."

"...why do you not go outside?"

Erik turned to her fully, blinking in confusing. He even touched his face, in case he'd forgotten he was wearing his mask.
"Are you not aware," he said, "that I am ugly as sin? That women faint, and children run screaming from the sight of me?"

"So...go out at night? I'm certain the air does not become stale after sun-down...it probably gains purity once the throngs have ceased to stir up dust and pestilence."

Despite his hatred of people and their reactions, there were certain things Erik had come to expect from the world. Disgust was one of them. It threw him off not to have it expressed.
"If you had to live as I have, you would not say such things. Night is a world away from Day, and to be denied the one makes the other less enticing. Of course I may go out at night, but I am not some dumb creature, like a bat."

"So you desire to sunbathe?" *she queried.* "...is there never a time when no one is about on the rooftops?"
