"Wait... for two years? For you? For...."
He couldn't even say, 'for us to be together?' It sounded like something only a stupid person would say, and he didn't have any control over whether his voice sounded hopeful or not.

"More like nine months," Veidt said quickly. "The process doesn't have to be complete. I think that it's probably best that we're extremely careful until then, if anything at all."

The way Veidt had gone to reassure him it would be less time than that conveyed something Adrien was hungry to hear. His eyes lifted at once to Adrian's.
"You want to, don't you? You wish you could right now."

“There are a lot of things I wish I could do right now. Solve world hunger, disarm every nuclear warhead on the planet. Unfortunately, these things take time.”
His smile was so artless and reasonable, you might have thought it was one of his Nova Express covers.

Adrien quirked an eyebrow.
"You wish you could do me?"
Clearly, he was trying not to smirk.
"Think it's worth a nine-month-long wait?"

Veidt laughed and reached across the table to clasp his hand.
“With that kind of anticipation, how could it not be?”

"You know it's going to last two minutes when it happens, right?" Adrien laughed, a little timidly. But nonetheless he entwined their fingers, growing breathless. "If you... If you wanted me that much, of course I would wait for you. I thought you wanted to screw me, sure, but I didn't think..."

“Well, don’t feel obligated to wait up for me,” Veidt cautioned, even as he squeezed Adrien’s hands back. “God knows I’m old enough to be your father, and pretty preoccupied most of the time.”

"I don't have a father," he said, almost optimistically, as though to reassure him. "It won't be weird at all. I told you -" he said, his breath catching in his throat. "I'm sort of crazy about you."

Veidt rubbed his thumb over Adrien’s knuckles affectionately.
“Don't get too far ahead of yourself. For all you know, you'll discover just how middle-aged and dull I really am and get tired of me."

"You'll tire of me first," he warned him. "They always do."

"You seem rather difficult to grow tired of," said Veidt. "And really, we've hardly begun. You really shouldn't sell yourself so short. You know I like you already, don't you? You don't have to worry about making a better impression on me."
The table kept them a safe distance apart and limited the affection Adrian could show him to another little squeeze of his hands.
"Now do you understand why I'd like to take care of you?”

Adrien took a casual sip of his coffee, glancing towards the other, empty side of the room with an insouciance that was undercut by the intimacy in how he gripped Adrian's hand.
"It's probably a lot of work," he said evasively, disguising as well as he could how this was affecting him. As casual as his tone was, his voice still ached.

“I don’t mind it,” Veidt said gently. “Especially not if it’s you. Haven’t I already shown you that much?”

"I bet I could really test your patience," Adrien said, risking a long look into his eyes. The phrase acquired a second meaning rather quickly.
