"I didn't start college until I was twenty-three," Veidt retorted.

"Yeah, but I bet everyone said you were a little genius even in public school. They did not say that about me," he said darkly. "Anyway, I don't know what I would study."

"They said I was a cheater," said Veidt, "but I suppose that's still no comparison. I'm sorry, Adrien."

Adrien shrugged. "It wasn't the classes that made me leave."
He sipped wine thoughtfully.

Veidt watched him for a moment and let the blanks fill themselves.
"Ah," he said. He set his own wineglass down. He suddenly was far less inclined toward drinking than he had been.

"Well, that is sad," he said too loudly, but with unfeigned good cheer. "Are you dumping me on the couch yet? I don't feel tired."

"Are you certain there's nothing else you want from me?" Veidt asked abruptly, leaning forward in his chair. "I'm willing to help with whatever you require."
God knew there seemed to be a lot of that, not that Adrien would admit it.

"Yeah," he said, suddenly getting an idea and sitting up straighter. "Yeah, let's watch a film."

“Hm? Oh- yes," said Veidt, the moment broken. "I can look through what we have."
He got up again and hurried away from the increasing awkwardness of being quite this close to Adrien.

Adrien continued to look like an unfortunate Orientalist illustration, holding the robe closed with one hand as it would have gaped too much otherwise, and sipping from his wine glass with the other. The only self-consciousness he felt was with Adrian's being comparably dressed. And he supposed he would have liked socks, as his feet were still cold, but not with the rest of himself so naked.
"Do you have any, I don't know. Ex-boyfriends who left clothes here?" he asked, trailing behind him. "Or ex-girlfriends, if that doesn't bother you. It doesn't bother me."

“Clothes haven’t really come up in that equation for a while now,” Veidt said flatly.

"You bring them over naked and then they leave naked?" he laughed, assuming Veidt had misspoken.
It was a few seconds before it occurred to him this was not that absurd, given a certain superman in Veidt's acquaintance.
"Oh, holy shit, I'm sorry."

“It is what it is,” said Veidt, with a dismissive little handwave.

"Explains why you give so much relationship advice. People who give good relationship advice are always in bad relationships," he said informatively with a toss of his wet hair.
