Adrien tried to give him a steady look, canny and worldly and unbothered, which was not ordinarily a difficulty for Adrien; he was still French, after all, though he'd come over to the States as a boy. But something in the atmosphere made his eyes feel itchy. He glanced away again, chin still stiff and proud.

There was a long silence from Veidt as he looked down at his hands on the desk, drumming his fingers.
"My father," he began, as he lifted his head again. "He had a... similar makeup, though I suppose without the interludes of charm. I'm sorry, Adrien."

The tone was dry, but detectably non-sarcastic. It wasn't a facetious question.
