"I didn't say settle," said Adrien, adjusting himself to full comfort in his chair, letting his hair flop lazily into his eyes. "More like have some fun?"

"Adrien," Veidt began.
He pushed his keyboard back and rose from his seat again, crossing to lean on the front of his desk again and brushing a disregarded action figure out of the way in the process.
"I think... you might have misunderstood something."

"I understand your fun allergy," said Adrien with a laugh.

"That's not-"
He pushed his hair back from where it had come loose, with a sigh.
"I don't- I didn't hire you for this. All right?"

"You said that already," said Adrien.
He had, it was true. He had denied it the night he'd hired him, and once more not too long after. Adrien understood how the game was played. It mattered to this businessman that he not feel like he'd picked up a boy. Adrien knew how to make him feel like it was all Adrien's idea.

"The message doesn't seem to have gotten through, then," said Veidt. "I don't like having to do this- I'm certain your intentions are good, after all-"

"It's certainly not your fault that you don't," said Veidt. "But even without that, I wouldn't want to further risk your reputation."

"Is that what it is about? Your reputation? Mr Veidt, I can be very discreet. I wouldn't blackmail you."

"And what of your reputation? I did read your files, Adrien- and that's not even approaching that we have the same name-"

"Not when you say them," said Adrien, affronted. "I don't care about my reputation. So what about it?"

"Well, I do, and I certainly am not going to risk it by suggesting that your first job after prison was a pretext for more of the same-"

"You say that like I haven't been doing more of the same," said Adrien, a little miffed, and feeling a twinge of concern, buried somewhere beneath his tousled blond hair, that if Veidt did not guess this already, learning it would disgust him.

Veidt frowned.
"Have you been?"
