"Just let me trim it. You'll thank me-"

Johannes sighed.
"All right, Herbert, if you insist."
He was vaguely surprised, but it wasn't worth arguing when Herbert's health was so tenuous. He sat and waited.

Herbert was excellent at cleaning up haircuts. This wasn't any exception.
"Vati, you'll be a veritable ladykiler," he said, with a toothy smirk, at the end of it.

"I shall trust your judgment," Johannes said, somewhat doubtfully, as he stood again. "It will return in a matter of days, regardless. Is this another hobby you have acquired?"

"It's not a hobby, vati, it's useful-"

"What need have you had to practice that?" Johannes scoffed in amusement.

"I have friends," Herbert said faintly in shock.

"And a rather severe visual impairment," Johannes reminded him. "Though I suppose I ought to congratulate you on learning a skill beyond your musical tendencies. Well done, then."
He still hadn't looked at himself, and seemed scarcely to care.

Herbert looked vaguely haunted, but tried to shake it off. "Well... what do you think?"

"About what? It scarcely matters, Herbert."

Herbert looked frustrated and smoothed the front of his shirt down repeatedly. He was wearing a vest that fit a little bit like a waistcoat, but actually was made out of suede and was from the previous decade.
"You're right," he muttered. "It doesn't matter."

"That's right. None of this matters."
Johannes reached up to touch Herbert on the cheek.
"Everything is transient, Herbert. Everything. You know, I believed when I sought out a maker that perhaps I had found a way of keeping things as they were, but... such a thing does not exist."
He pulled his hand away again, looking into the middle distance, lost in thought.
"Surely you don't think this- any of this, your friends, your boy- will last as they are, do you?"

Herbert felt his mouth go very dry. He blinked, feeling he must look very stupid. But at least his father wasn't looking at him this time.
"Why- why not? I- Sarah stayed with you for so long. And we - We've only been apart a little while- Everything always bounces back, if it's meant to be-"
He could feel his voice approaching a childish whine of needing comfort, and hated it.
