"I knew it" he smiled as they rounded the corner, away from the spot where Ben died and into the hustle and bustle of the city.
They found the first place that served coffee and donuts a half a block away and went in. The smell when they opened the door was harsh and saccharine and made Peter's mouth water.

Dan ordered them a couple donuts and two cups of black coffee with room for cream, they found a booth near the window to try and soak up some of the sun. "Do they have the air conditioning on in here?" He wrapped his hands around his coffee and shivered.

"You'd think living in this city long enough you'd be used to the cold."

"One, just because I'm used to it doesn't mean I like it and two did you just call me old?"

"Yes and yes" Peter grinned in to his coffee "no offense of course."

"I'm sure" Dan laughed and poured a mess of sugar into his coffee and bit in to the donut.

What could he tell a seventeen year old, that his partner wanted an open relationship, that his best friend tried to commit suicide and he got stoned on the beach a bunch?
"It was a disaster" he replied with a exasperated sigh "but don't worry about it, it'll work itself out in the end."

Peter smiled "That's incredibly depressing."

"You're telling me" he stirred his coffee "you're amazingly good at directing conversations away from you did you know that?"

"That I did" he made a face and grabbed the sugar and creamer and started drowning his coffee.

Dan chuckled, Peter reminded him of him and that both invigorated and terrified him. He only hoped he had no questions about his sexuality and he'd all ready had it all figured out, because Dan had been so deep in the closet he'd forgotten why he was in there and came out the other side and surprised himself. So many years of trying to figure out where his interest lay and it all came down to just admitting that his sexuality was fluid and that he wasn't just 'experimenting' in college.

Peter took a long drink of his coffee and looked at the older man who'd suddenly grown very interested in the spot on the table. The little time he'd spent with Mr. Dreiberg he'd noticed this, he'd drop out of the conversation for a moment as if reassessing himself and it usually took a little prodding to pull him out of it; Peter figured he was either a very deep thinker or an epileptic "Hey-"
