Teja took a moment to steady herself against the sink, made sure the door was locked behind her, and finally used the bathroom. Then she washed her hands compulsively, grateful that Adrian was rich enough to have a moisturizing hand soap - she always found she needed to use lotion after washing her hands, she was a little too thorough about it. Grimacing at herself in the mirror - in an unflattering empire-waist nightgown that was a little too revealing to wear around Adrian Veidt - she pulled down the top of her dress to look at the scratch mark.
It was actually bruising.
She pulled up the nightgown in a hurry, thinking internally that it would be ruined if she reopened the wound. She'd have to ask Adrian about bandages.
She came out in a couple of minutes, having fingercombed her hair and swished water in her mouth.
"I'm a little hungry," she said with a grimace.

"What kind of hungry?" Adrian said grimly.

"Like I just lost a lot of blood and I feel nauseous," she said dryly. "Honestly, Adrian, if I were turning, would I even tell you I wanted human blood? You wouldn't let your guard down then."

"I trust you," Adrian said, with a small shrug.

"You shouldn't trust vampires," she said darkly.

"I'm also quite a bit larger and stronger than you are. If you did indeed turn,it would be another few weeks before you had me at a disadvantage."

"So you trust yourself, then."

He laughed weakly.
"Well, I know I make a good backup."

She patted his arm comfortingly.

"I could bring you something. You might want to stay up here for a while; I'm not sure I want to drag the others into this yet."

"Thank you," she said, bursting with relief over both statements. "I'd appreciate that."

"Here's at least a little good luck," he said over his shoulder as he went down the hall to bring food back to her. "We're both vegetarians."

She smiled wanly, but sincerely.

When he returned a few minutes later, Adrian was carrying a jug of lemonade and a plateful of small dark green things about the size and shape of disembodied thumbs together on a tray. It was bizarrely domestic for the time of night. He brought it onto the room and set it on the end of the bed.

"What are these?" asked Teja, who had found a blanket - impressively, as it was the dead of summer. (It had been in a plastic storage container underneath a piece of furniture. She had of course put everything back to hide that she had looked.)
