She took in a sharp breath.
"Vampires? What about vampires?"

"You know, their little stunt last night. Why, did something else happen?"
He sat up, looking concerned.

She lay back down on him quickly, so he couldn't see her face.
"No, no... nothing-"
Now that the lie was out, she couldn't take it back, she couldn't tell him about it.
Tomorrow it would all be over as though nothing had happened to tell-
"-well, there was something-"

"...I saw Johannes today to ask him about his motives in bowing to you at the Gala last night-"

"So did I-"

"He mentioned it, but he didn't tell me what you said. What did he say to you?"
It was dangerous to respond like this, moving away from what had happened to her, going back to pretending it hadn't.

"He thinks I might be politically valuable as an ally to his... kind. That and his paternal nature felt I could use that kind of support."
He made a bitter scoffing noise.

"That's more or less what he admitted to me, though he was telling me a lie at first."
Maybe the fact that he lied was proof she couldn't trust him-
Maybe the fact that he lied was proof that his feelings were sincere, such that he'd lie to hide from her his worse nature, hoping she would only see him in a forgiving light-

"What was the lie?"

"That he only did it to support you. Emotionally, or something. Then I pushed and he admitted that it would be good for him and his kind, more or less, to have a public figure like you on their side. Herbert and I talked about the same later - you know, Loki, he's really not as terrible as we wrote him off as being. I feel like you and he might get along if there weren't so much bad blood between you."

"Herbert. I don't know how you'd feel about Johannes."
Especially now.
"Especially now."
Now that he's kissed me, declared he loves me-
"Now that he's trying to piggyback off your success, that is."
He hadn't declared he loved her, though, had he? He'd said he couldn't stop thinking about her, that he was infatuated, but that was hardly the same thing. In fact, she didn't think the word love had ever come up, even with Herbert, had it.

"Well, he'll have to get in line behind Veidt," said Loki. "These vampires revealed me as a god, and Veidt has made me merely a client."
He leaned back again.
"Back to being told what to say, how to act, how to dress... He's lucky you've given me such a care for this world."
There was no resentment in his voice, only a profound weariness.
"No goats, I promise."

"Oh, good," she said. It came off more relieved than she wanted it to.
