"If I haven't done it yet, I think I'll be alright."

"What if she comes back?" Megan countered. "Would she want to see you like this?"

Curt sighed.
"Then I'll run a comb through my hair, for God's sake. I'm a middle-aged man, there's only so much improvement to be done."

"I meant not being drunk. You look fine, except the part where you also look bleary and miserable."

"I'm capable of holding it together in front of company, thank you." It was difficult to really be peeved with somebody who had clearly sprung into some kind of misplaced nurturing impulse -- it was like a firm lecture from Gwen Stacy, albeit surlier.

"That's very kind of you."
Trapped on an island with a bevy of middle-aged men and one David Lynch fan, it served him right.

"Well, that may be."
Curt found himself wishing he had a cigarette.

"Anyway, I was almost a nurse, so."
She pushed the glass of water toward him.

Curt took it and drained the glass, to prove a point -- or at least tried to. It was difficult to pull off with dignity.
"There, are we pleased now?"
