"Don't look at me like that, I'm only trying to help you!"

"Pssh, who needs helping--"

Herbert opened the casket and began lowering himself into it with a rueful, exhausted-looking smile.
"You know I'm only thinking of your safety-"

"Well, I don't need it. I've done a perfectly fine job of looking out for myself, even if you don't like how I do it."
Alex couldn't look at him, so he was staring imperiously into the sheeted distance.

Herbert sighed and tried to recline imperiously in the casket, but his legs were too long, so he climbed out again and put his hands on Alex's shoulders.
"My dear boy, I wouldn't be here if you hadn't asked me."

He glared with pursed lips somewhere in the direction of Herbert's armpit.
"Then help me, but I didn't come here for a lecture on my faults--"

"I'm already helping you, hmm? And soon we'll go back to the old country, as a family."

Lip-pursing intensified.

"What we've always done," Herbert said gently, cupping Alex's face in his hands. "Stay. Continue on. Thrive in our own way."

(This seemed like an unfair improvisation, since nearly anyone would have reached up to touch Herbert's face, and it probably wouldn't have given Herbert proper the weirdest boner of his life.)
"You're going to thrive, while I stay home and manageably rot away, huh?"

"My dear boy, look what happened to you this time! Do you expect me to wait around and see how much worse it will be next time?"

"Can't you at least let me try learning from my mistakes? I'm never going to get any better--"
The second part of that sentence, the part about being allowed to go out there and try and screw things up, fell off before he could actually say it. Neither of them were actually going to get any better at all.

Herbert startled and then froze, momentarily shaken out of his role. He blinked and bit his lower lip hard enough to draw blood on one of his fangs, and then abruptly smoothed his hair back again and re-adopted his father's kindly, concerned expression.
"Exactly, Herbert. Exactly."

Alex leant forward, landing on Herbert's shoulder a little hard.
"How good of you."

Herbert hugged him, stroking his hair.
