"I seem to be making things worse," he said wryly, gesturing around them.

"I mean, I thought you had said all you had to say."

"Perhaps I'm interested in what you have to say."

Teja gathered her things and made sure everything was in better shape.
"Well, I'm off at four."

"I hope it's no imposition to you. I only fear that we might have gotten off on the wrong foot- is that the phrase?"

"Yes, it is."
She looked back up at him with mild scrutiny. He was difficult to read.
"Why are you being so nice to me?"

Teja felt an embarrassing flood of sympathy and a desire to help him acclimate. It had been somewhat similar when Loki had first accidentally revealed he was a space alien, but at least in that case he had been truly isolated and Loki still looked extraordinarily young. Krolock was a vampire, who had had more mortal years at the time of his undeath than she had now. And her extending the hand of friendship to David made even more sense, when David was a very young android.
"I'm willing to believe lots of things," she offered warmly. "You'd know your life better than I would."

He smiled slowly, teeth on full display.
"Good."

"Oh, yours are upside down," she said distractedly.
Immediately she looked abashed.
"I'm sorry."

He stared at her for a moment, then broke into very abrupt spooky laughter.
