"Well?" Herbert demanded, growing bright-eyed with impatience.

"She's at the parfumerie," Krolock said. "He's with his family."

Herbert covered his mouth with both hands.
"Oh, Vati- I'll go get your cloak-"

"That won't be necessary, my boy. These American summers are hellish."

Herbert stood up and hugged his father's smaller figure.
"Yes, of course."

"I want you to stay here while I make my move, do you understand? And no calling Loki, either."

"That scrawny little disappointment?" Herbert waved a hand. "I never liked him anyway."

Loki slid his phone back in his pocket as he stepped back into the room, feeling the most unpleasant mixture of annoyance that he didn't get to do the whole astral-projection trick and preemptive extra-annoyance at the fact that Krolock's outsized spawn was in the room at the time anyway, so even if he had astrally projected himself, he'd've been in Herbert's view.
"Sorry about that," he said wearily.

"Him and his father," Loki replied. "And a woman, though she seems less inclined to travel."
He recounted the story of what had happened at the opera with sneering distaste (Meg looking a bit shaken and announcing that she'd be going upstairs to sleep for a while longer about halfway through), and ended the story leaning on the counter, looking rueful.
"I ought never to have created Lukas Ashton. One half of this city has come to beg at my feet for favors and the other waits in amusement for my further humiliation."

Thor mulled over this, not voicing or planning to his relief that Loki was finally... learning a lesson about public responsibility.
"What will you do?"

He laughed bitterly.
"Would that I knew. If I had my way I would simply erase the whole ordeal from all human memory save Teja's, but even that would not correct my lack of ability."
He gave Thor a wry look.
"Magic and cleverness do not a suitable husband make."
