"Ahhh," said Fandral wisely. "Who hit you?"

Loki's head snapped up.
"I fell in love," he said simply.

The response was palpable surprise, widening eyes, lifted brows, and open mouths all around. Even Hogun looked nearly impressed.
Of course, Loki should have anticipated that Volstagg, what remained of his sub clutched in hand, would hug him extremely tightly, blessing his match and wishing him great happiness.
Fandral looked faintly shocked and a bit preoccupied.
"With whom?"

"A Midgardian woman, they are to be married."

Loki was too relieved by Volstagg's reaction to protest much beyond a slightly strangled "Easy- easy- I still need these ribs-"
When he was finally released, he leaned against the counter, a little winded, and made a "yeah, what he said" sort of gesture at Thor while glancing at Fandral.

Thor noticed that Fandral's expression was unreadable, and carefully so. He had presumed Fandral would be more enthusiastic in response to this, but it would seem that his personal history made him more closed off to the topic than receptive. In any case, perhaps it was better that Loki not be subject to their interrogation.
"My friends, I am sure Miss Elness will permit your staying here while you visit, but you must take care to be very civil. Recently we were subject to the presence of a Midgardian creature known as a vampire, and following in his footsteps you must be wary to not make yourselves unwelcome."
"A creature?" Fandral mused. "What dark doings was he up to?"
"He drank much brandy and left the bottles around," said Thor with an entirely un-self-aware grimness, "and frequently forewent pants."
Volstagg seemed to be taking this in but Fandral looked on the verge of laughter.

"Great oversized idiot of a creature," Loki added, gesturing at a height only marginally above his own head that incidentally wasn't too far off from Thor's or Fandral's, and certainly below Volstagg's. He still hadn't quite gotten his wind back, so his words came out in angry jolts. "Half-blind- scarred from gut to groin-"

Fandral looked unimpressed. "A very tall battle-scarred fellow? You've certainly gone native."

"No, he is not much like an Asgardian," countered Thor, privately bewildered by what Loki found actually offensive about Herbert. "He is base and ignoble with little respect for Miss Elness's hospitality."

"And yet his father finds him faultless," Loki added. "They're a degenerate lot, vampires. Dead humans walking about past their expiration dates, sticking their teeth in living throats. At least the whole sorry pack of them have no further reason to bother Teja or myself."
He sucked his teeth for a moment, allowing his expression to soften.
"I ought to bring her here later, introduce her to you. She's..."
Loki, for once, was struggling for words.
"I'm certain you will understand my feelings for her, unexpected as they may seem. I didn't intend to love her- I would have scoffed if I were invited to anticipate my feelings for her, but she..."
He was no longer looking at any of them.
"She has taught me to turn back on what I might have become. I know not why she has chosen to return my love, but I am... awed, and grateful that she has."

Thor's smile was sincere but spoke of his own sadness. He was glad, so glad, for his brother, but his happiness mirrored what Thor had lost. He was only satisfied to know the change in Loki was real, for Loki of the past would have gloated at this irony.
Volstagg was moved to tears. Thor took this opportunity to return the foodstuffs to the fridge, thinking he would need to find more and more work to feed a household that full of Asgardians.

There were voices coming from downstairs that woke Meg from the light nap she'd settled into. Cautiously, she slipped out of her room and down the hallway.
When she reached the stairs, however, there was already someone sitting in the way. She tiptoed a few steps closer.
"...hallo?"

The steps on the stairway behind her were light and stealthy, but Sif had honed her instincts for being crept up on in centuries on and off the battlefield, and heard them immediately, at first tensing and then leaping to her feet, turning and drawing her blade. It had only begun to come out when she took in immediately the presence of a small, pregnant Midgardian girl who could not have been very old even by mortal standards. Her expression went from fierce, with bared teeth and narrowed eyes, to stupefied, to apologetic in a moment. With a metallic sound she shoved the sword back in its place, then clapped one fist over her chest and bowed deeply, and hastily.
"The Lady Sif.... at your service," she added in something like a mumble, eyes glancing briefly aside in her embarrassment. She had corrected her behavior immediately, but she could not cover for it entirely. She must add further apology.
"Forgive me, but I thought, upon hearing a noise, that it must be some trickery of the snake downstairs."
And Loki could potentially have thought of using the illusion of a young girl to earn Sif's trust - he would certainly have chosen blond hair for her - but the pregnancy detail made this highly unlikely.
It occurred to her that the girl might not even know about Loki's trickery. Well, Sif did not mind rocking the boat - anyone near him must be warned of who he really was.

Meg gaped at her."I-" She blinked a couple of times, looking the woman up and down. She realized abruptly that she hadn't caught her name, even though she was pretty certain it had been said, and felt about ready to die of embarrassment on the spot. "It's... fine," she said, with a little curtsy. She held the curtsy a little too long and abruptly caught herself, standing and looking away again, rubbing her elbow.

((*guitar chord* LA LA LA LA LA LA~ ))
Sif had done her a huge injustice and probably terrified her momentarily out of her wits. Remorse was not useful in a warrior's heart, but Sif could feel nothing else. Her hatred of Loki - was it really so deep as that? - was making her a reflection of the monster she feared him to be.
"I am so, so sorry," she stressed. "I demand no such supplication of you - and really I would never have gone so far as to draw the entire thing," she said with a gesture at the sword at her thigh. "I'm not blind to my surroundings, even when startled."
