"Mmph. How kind."
He smirked, gratified.

"Alec," he said, with a warm and welcoming smile, and a hand settling onto his shoulder and squeezing.

Tiago smiled, winningly indeed.
"I must say, I admire your work very much, Alec."

Rodriguez lifted his chin a little, radiating schoolboyish mischief. "As far as she's concerned, I hardly know about your work."

He looked almost reproving. "Now, now, that I doubt. Everyone knows about my work, at least now they do."
He laughed as though talking about the inescapability of his recent success, rather than threatened by the idea that it really was escapable.

This he could speak on without merely pretending modesty and all-knowing. "Ah, yes, that'll be her. Always trying to keep us on a very tight leash - need to know, that sort of thing."
With his carefully hidden hatred of the British government and all M stood for, it was safe to assume he had no love for that woman. And then there was her manner - cold, clinical. She didn't pretend to be anything like a woman was, yet sometimes she was damningly female, although in none of the appropriate ways. And like all of their superiors, with the young and old alike, she kept you in the dark, almost out of spite more than anything. Well, Alec would not mind tipping the balance in young Tiago's favor, for better or for worse.
"All the more reason to get drinks," he said with a short, but sincere laugh. "There's always room for a mentor in this business - you really can use all the help you can get."
And even if he was an inside job all of his own, that was, at least, entirely true.

"An opportunity to swap dossiers," he drawled, fully aware of other exchanges not uncommon between the younger generation of spies. His accent was particularly heavy on 'dossiers'.
M would have certainly recognized this exchange for what it was, that is, the kind of full-bore indiscriminate flirtatiousness that came naturally to him and would shortly come to cause the man some real problems.

"Swap... dossiers," repeated Alec, faintly endeared by the youth's strong accent. Christ, it was a real treat to picture M picking him up like a gigolo. He envisioned her exasperated, but he'd obviously impressed her for her to actually recruit him. Perhaps, then, he'd impress Alec. He might have hated the bitch, even if it was mainly because of everything she represented, but she didn't impress easily. Even seasoned agents didn't always do it. Some Gibraltarian who clearly spoke Spanish as his first language - after smart-aleck, most likely - managing this feat was probably worth even Alec's attention.
And of course, whether she admitted it or not, it implied an attachment - or at this stage, at least, an investment - that would make him a valuable asset should he ever need to harm her. In fact making sure her investment paid off would undoubtedly prove useful later on. Suddenly he had an interest in him beyond an ennui-laced tiger's glance at his tanned young throat above the collar.
"We could indeed. In fact I hope we can."

Tiago looked at him out from under long, very blond eyelashes.
"Ah, our time is cut short--"
He could hear one of her perpetually harried-looking male secretaries making his way over.
