"Work, yeah." Gabriel tapped some ash off of his cigarette, casually. "I know a lot of people, you know, bohemian types..." Nothing in the world really came for free, and for all these artist types talked about ushering in a new century they seemed to have roughly the same interests as anybody else, only more expensively drunk. "I'm sure we can work something out, nice kid like you."

"I'm not an artist or bohemian or anything," Moritz told him, slowing down his next pull so he didn't waste half a cigarette. "Ilse was, though. Kind of. ...Mostly?"
Were you still bohemian if you were going back home? Or wherever Ilse went before Moritz shot himself. When he'd pissed her off into running away, he couldn't really see where she was going.
Of course, the potentially-dying thing definitely messed his memory up, but still--the only thing he remembered were flashes of her giant white shirt.

"Nobody really starts out being bohemian. It happens to you, like getting warts." 'Warts' was not his usual first choice of surprising communicable condition, but no need to scare the boy now, was there. "You'll catch on quickly enough. Be a courier or something, I'll bet you can run pretty fast."

"Well, I wasn't the slowest one in school." Nope, that was either Ernst (who couldn't keep pace long enough) or Hanschen (who just didn't care).

Gabriel would hate to see what the slowest kid looked like, but well, bad things happened to the ones who couldn't run fast enough, wherever you were.
He smiled, looking philosophical. "You'll do, then."

"Is that... it?" Granted, he was happy about the apparent speed of getting a job, but he still wondered why. And the niggling feeling was enough for him to reduce the last of his cigarette to ash. "So, am I working for you, or... someone else?"
