Jess who had been listening from the kitchen heard Adrien's remark and felt suddenly very embarsssed.
She had stopped mirroring the good virgin Mary at a very young age and had long since decided god would never choose her to have any of his children and was fine with it.
But it didn't stop socities shaming of sexually liberated women from affecting her at times.
She knew Adrien's remark had no intention of hurting, it was just her thoughts and it was directly related to her own life, Jess still felt her stomach knot.
She poured herself a glass of wine and downed it.

"I never really got that chance either," she admitted. She had never thought about this before, but her saintly mother, who had raised Adrien in a brothel, as she'd only realized recently, was about as Mary-pure as Adrien was. That had never stopped Adrien from seeing her mother as analogous to the religious figure, with herself as a baby boy as little Jesus. "Someday, Steve, I'll tell you my whole sordid history, and you will probably be in horror."

"It is not really a phone story," said Adrien with a sigh. "But I am always ready. It is less of a shock to me than it is to other people. I used to think it was normal."

"Then don't tell it to me over the phone" Steve leaned his head against the window and closed his eyes "I can wait."

Steve suddenly became incredibly quiet.

"I do not know if you are really so ready as you say, anyway," said Adrien with a sigh, and another puff on her cigarette. "I wish you were 'ere with me now. But zere is business I must take care of now that I have thought more, and know some things."

Steve replied, in a sad whisper "I've got nothing but time."
He'd live a long time, Erskine's serum made certain of that.

And Adrien had no idea.
"I wish I could stay on, but I can not think of anything to say."

Steve nodded "Yes, then, I will, talk to you soon."

"Good-bye. I love you."
Adrien's voice was suddenly full of tears.

Steves tone when he responded aimed to tell Adrien he felt similarly, maybe not true love, but something very close.
"Goodbye Adrien."
