"Boyhood is too early for such lessons."
Tybalt wasn't truly cut out to be hard-hearted, whatever they had done -- whoever they might be -- had harmed him, had laid scars on scars until there was nothing left unmarked and called that strength. Victor hadn't been destined to a long and peaceful childhood, but fate had cut that short, not some other cruel force.

"Well I wasn't a boy after-" He laughed in a thick-throated way. "I wasn't a boy after that."

They were both orphans, but even in hardship Doom had adults who had cared for him, who had provided for a child that was rapidly growing and learning. His own self-pity (and that was a noble indulgence, something to brood over) often made this out to be nothing, but Tybalt's life was -- desolate. Completely desolate from the age of seven. If he had not been torn away from Verona and deposited miles and years and universes away, he wouldn't have had a long life ahead of him, almost certainly. But he was young and hoarse and still miserable and lovely.
"They took that from you."

"Who wants to be a weeping orphaned mass of useless flesh? Better to be a weapon and of use to someone-"

"Your usefulness is not limited to service as a blunt instrument," Doom said, forcibly level but still appalled. "When you are sober and well, I'll teach you some more constructive magic. You have other purposes."

"I could show you my usefulness now, my lord," he said after a pause, intently.

"You are no more sober than you were a half-hour ago. I respectfully decline."

"If I had gone to Mercutio," he said with a hoarse, angry sigh, not directed at Doom in the least, "the only reason he'd turn me away would be to watch me suffer, a stupid fish on the shore, not knowing what to do, and then I would plead and he would taunt me and finally fuck me. Maybe."

"I wish you just would," he said in a raw, pathetic, but nonetheless resigned voice.
