"I am not ignorant to how you must regard your captivity here. I do not intend to prolong it any further."

Tybalt looked suddenly hopeful, like a dog pricking its ears.

"If it were a matter of mere time or distance, of various planes or alternate Earths, it would be no more difficult for me to achieve than transporting you to the castle gates, or to the next province. All heaven and earth lie within Doom's grasp."

Tybalt could not grasp that there was an unspoken 'but' at the end of this and merely stared at Doom hopefully.

"It is not such a trifling matter as this."
The look on Tybalt's face only compounded what the tyrant already knew.
"Doom has exhausted the fullest extent of his resources in the interest of returning his guest to his rightful place in his undoubtedly noble household--" Where they treated him like a dog, chained and muzzled until they had need of him-- "Toiling unceasingly."
The thought of it had eaten at him like a cruel frost since Victor had realized there was no fit apology. Tybalt hated him. Tybalt hated him from the first moment he ever knew of his existence, hated him and with every right to.
"I have consulted experts in these matters, when my own powers failed me. And fail me they have, or have seemed to."
His stooped bearing didn't change, even imperceptibly under the armor, but the admission of a loss, a failure, left his voice strained.

Tybalt had looked very quickly shocked and pained, and towards the end of Doom's speech, was verging on panicked.
"....do you mean that..." he began hoarsely. "...that... I can't go home?"

"Through no fault of your own. Wherever you hail from, it is... inaccessible to me."

He looked crushed, and moved to a sitting position, then stumbled to his feet. He seemed disoriented, not purposeful.

Doom stepped forward in alarm.
"Swear you will do nothing foolish as a result of this--"

He stared up at him blankly, then abruptly stumbled and fell on the bedpost, and clung to it.

"You are free now to despise me, pathetic as I am. I have failed a guest--"

"I have failed my family," he said numbly. "And they mean infinitely more to me than I to you-"

"The failure is mine, not yours," Doom said, rather sharply. "I have deprived you of both liberty and homeland. A more capable sovereign would have identified the cause of your abduction and remedied it within the week."

"You were going to keep me for a year regardless," Tybalt reminded him somewhat moodily.

"Truly acting in the interests of justice, to detain an innocent stranger."
Doom detained whomever he pleased, but it was difficult to be pleased with himself now.
