"Naw, my body's fine," he said with a shrug of his skinny shoulders - he'd changed out of the dress a while ago. "I just mean... I mean... that kind of life, you never get it when you're... well. An invert. Adrian was lucky for me. You know who I was with before him?"

"I'm afraid if you told me, I can not remember" he was sure he hadn't, but he didn't want to be rude.

"Roger Marchetti."

Dan's eyes opened up a bit wider "Adrien, I had, no idea."

"Yeeeah. Adrian's, well you know him, but Marchetti was a real bastard. When I say Adrian almost hit me in Brasov? Marchetti woulda done it. Didn't have any qualms about that sort of thing, felt it was natural for a man to keep his... well, whoever he was with, in line. And Adrian almost poisoned me, but Marchetti would have killed me a couple of times if friends of his hadn't realized he was out of his mind and intervened. He was taking me along with him to help him out when I guess he decided he didn't wanna split the cash, so he knocked me out, stole my wallet, and ditched me. We'd been together two years then. I got a scar on my temple from where his signet ring nicked me... blood was all over the sheets, if I hadn't had cash in my boot I'd have been screwed. If you were here I'd show you the scar. I bet you and I, we've both got a ton."

Listening carefully, Dan looped the telephone wire around his arm without knowing it, he was too busy being slightly horrified by Adrien's story.
"Adrien, fuck-" he exhaled and shook his head, at the very moment, his thoughts had moved on to Adrian, and how he was going to call him very soon and tell him what a miserable bastard he was.
"I never knew that you'd been through all that, I mean I knew a little, but not-" he wasn't sure how to react, in truth, he'd suddenly become filled with a righteous anger that was not letting him speak all of what he was feeling. Adrien deserved better than the life that he'd lived, Dan believed that, with all of his heart, so to hear these things.
He couldn't help it, what had Adrian called him, a boy scout?
Yea, that was it, a boy scout, and god dammit, somebody has to hold on to some sort of moral code around here.

Adrien shrugged, lying back on the hotel bed looking suspiciously near tears, but stubbornly refusing to. "Eh, even that's kinda a step up from other stuff I done. I was... when I was 16, I killed somebody. I mean. Adrian found records that say I was executed for it in 1939. I shouldn't even be here- I forget if I told you this before or not. Adrian always said it was some higher power giving us a chance to be together... some second chance, huh?"
And then he really did burst into tears.

Dan held the receiver closer to his ear, and could hear Adrien sobbing.
He didn't say anything, he couldn't, Adrien had sounded like he needed to cry, and Dan was more than willing to let him do it and talk about whatever it was he needed.
Dan hadn't known any of this, but he couldn't blame Adrian for killing someone.
He'd done it, once or twice, not that he meant it, but, he had, and he'd felt the guilt and dealt with it. It seems Adrien hadn't.

He stopped and wiped his face on the edge of blanket. "Suh-sorry."

"What have I told you about being sorry?" He asked softly "You never have to be it with me, plus you sounded like you needed to let it out, I wouldn't want to stop that."

"Ah, don't worry about it, things move fast around here, I just learn to deal with it honestly."
