He took them off, and indeed he didn't look especially surprised. He'd seen this before, obviously.
"...I just don't understand," he said, before breaking off, looking saddened.

"It just never ends well with humans."

"But what are you really?"
His mind was racing ahead, trying to think of what snake eyes could mean. He didn't know much about any of this- ghosts, vampires, goblins or something.
There was one firm association with snakes that stood out in the back of his mind but it was such an awful possibility that it hadn't really headed North yet.

He looked away. He felt so, so naked without a pair of shades to hide his eyes.
"Does it honestly matter?"

"Crowley, for Christ's sake," he said, tearing up again. "If you're gonna break my heart have the heart to tell me why-"

"Adrien, no," he said, still looking away.

"Please," he said, catching hold of his arm. "I can take this- some kind of demon, I don't-"
He was just grasping at straws, and nothing he could think of could immediately seem nearly as terrible as the thought of losing him-

Crowley stubbornly refused to make eye contact with Adrien and stayed silent.

The pure god-awfulness of that possibility was only just sinking in after he said it- because there was a difference between a vampire, like his friend Magda, and being a demon, because demon was really the thing that had been in the back of his mind (because a Catholic boy, he'd really know all about snakes, wouldn't he?), and yet demon had a frighteningly awful history in his mind. Because if Crowley had been some kind of new thing he'd never heard of he could take it in stride, but demon brought up sermons and terrifying futures and the certainty that a seventeen-year-old boy, hollow-eyed from crying, had once felt in an alley knowing he had murdered a man for the money, just for the hell of it, was bound for the inferno no matter how many years left in his ratty, miserable life there might be.
But when Crowley had said that he'd care and he'd insisted that howevermuch he cared couldn't make a big difference, he hadn't thought of that. He'd spent so much time around Adrian, insisting he wasn't going to Hell because there was no such thing as a soul-
This was such a horrifying train of thought that he tried to force his mind back to the conversation at present, only to realize that Crowley had steadfastly not answered him.
Which was itself almost an answer.
And a whole host of memories rushed by to remind him of the many talks they'd had about the nature of good and evil and the memory of Crowley saying they all started out wanting to be the epitome of goodness - and that it didn't last in the end, and that it wasn't so much that he didn't know exactly when he'd stopped feeling that, just that he couldn't tell Adrien-
And Adrien was suddenly so very out of breath and shaken that when he tried to hastily get up out of his chair as though to pace the room and put this from his mind that he tripped and fell to the floor in a tangle of limbs, a single wet gasp in shock and brief pain escaping his mouth.

"Shit," said Crowley as he got out of his chair to help Adrien up.

He wiped at his eye with a shaky hand, with an almost shyness to his motions; it was resignation, more than anything. "Like - like the Biblical kind- is that it..."

He looked at Adrien and sighed. "We're only mentioned a couple times, really."

He looked up at him, drawing his lower lip into his mouth, trying not to cry.
