He made an almost grunt noise of assent.

"And the locket itself is unharmed."

He sighed.

There was a lot to unpack there. Though he did have honest admiration for Susan Storm, her intelligence and determination as well as her particular skills, Doom had to admit that part of the initial attraction had been spiting Richards, demonstrating his own superiority by proving the superior spouse to a more than worthy woman. Tybalt's circumstances seemed like a petty melodrama of the same situation, with a few additional complications. Or conversely, if a rival had ever appeared for Valeria's affections -- but no one ever had, and now no one ever would.
"Is it so necessary that the girl be married?"

"They desire it," he mumbled.

Tybalt made a miserable noise.

Doom brushed his long hair away from his face with something resembling tenderness.
"Doom once knew a young woman of... exceptional virtue. Her companionship would have made me exquisitely happy. But ultimately, she chose to remain solitary and would not take a husband. It was bitter news at the time, but... a girl may choose to remain single, you know. And a father who would force her into a union is unworthy of his children," he finished, rather brusquely.

Tybalt shut his eyes tightly, looking more greatly in pain than he had been even at the worst of it during the earlier lesson.
"- she- she wants to wed-"

"Then pray for her better judgment. The matter is not in your hands, Tybalt, you need not feel such misery."

"Tybalt," he said rather warningly, regretting having walked right into this.

Without much warning Tybalt gripped Doom's hand and turned his face against the cold metal, looking completely lost. It served a purpose, at least, though Tybalt was not coherent enough to consciously realize it - it was important he calm himself lest he seize.

Doom watched him curiously for a few moments, dimly aware of what he was doing and not in ill enough temper to make bellowing declarations about those who dare! touch Doom's person and so on. He was almost childlike in some ways, and it was difficult to blame him for that.

Tybalt was breathing heavily, eyes no longer shut but wide open, though seeing nothing. A tear dripped down his cheek. Had Doom's hand been bare Tybalt's grip would have hurt, but as it was the only hand he was hurting was his own, not that he noticed.
