"...I was still scared, though. Then."

"Yeah, that's understandable. It'd take quite a stoic not to be fazed by that."

Adrien opened his mouth to change the subject, but instead stared ahead blankly for a moment as though too disturbed by the memory to recall what was going on.

Crowley squeezed Adrien's shoulder. He wasn't so good at this comforting thing.

Adrien looked startled, then grinned and leaned back, picking up his champagne again.
"Eh, well, ain't young forever!"

He looked down and faked a smile. "Heh. Yeah. Gotta live for today and all that."
I'm an arsehole. Why do I care that I'm an arsehole?

"Trouble is that's what I usually do, and most of the time, it just leads to me not thinking about tomorrow like a dumbass. Am I gonna have money for food next week, am I gonna have a place to live next week, is today's boyfriend gonna be tomorrow's broken heart..."

Most likely. Crowley did not enjoy all the guilt this conversation was causing. He didn't like guilt and he shouldn't have it. And, most of all, he didn't really want to hurt Adrien, but he was lying to him, and even if he was telling the truth it's not as though it could last.
"Maybe while you're here you could look for a job or something. Get yourself independent so you don't have to worry about all that, you know? I mean, I can't make any promises about the last one, but food and a place to live, that's possible."

"I could hook again, I guess," he said a little dejectedly, not seeming to realize Crowley did not mean that. "It's easy enough."

"Nah, come on, that didn't work out too well before. There's lots you could do. You could work in a shop, for example."

"Crowley, I never even finished school. I've never had a real job."

"Not a big job. Just something that'll give you enough to get by. You wouldn't be living large or anything, but you wouldn't be relying on anyone but yourself."

"...I don't know that a job that little could support me in the city," he said dubiously.

He shrugged. He wasn't entirely sure how that would work either, having never wanted for anything himself.
"People manage it every day. It'd wouldn't be a very nice place to live, probably."

Adrien sighed and sank back in the bubbling tub. How bizarre and depressing it was to talk about needing to work a poorly-paying job to barely stay alive in the city if he left Adrian, while he was still experiencing comparative luxury with Crowley, who, in spite of the warm welcome he'd shown, wasn't quite acting like Adrien was allowed into his life.
Even if he did have to go back to hooking or whatever, even if he did go back into poverty, he hoped Crowley and he could... continue to see each other.
Hoping for more than that wasn't likely to make anything better, but he couldn't help it.
