"...I hadn't thought of that yet. Come here-"

He slowly lowered his hand.
She could keep her memories of him.

Stroking his face, she said, "Whatever cultural associations you have.... this is a new slate, okay? I don't think I'll be disappointed in you."

"You don't know how bad it really is-"

"....maybe it's only bad to you and wouldn't be to me."

"Oh- oh darling-"
She pulled him close and kissed him.
"He didn't deserve to call himself a parent- your best interests should be what guide them; if they think of anything else - well - look, maybe it's for the better that you're here and not - there. Wherever 'there' is."

"Look, I've been there, I have - I know what it does to you - I know what it's like- I know what it's like when you can only judge yourself by their standards and you can only see yourself as a failure for not being what they want. But if that's how they see you, if they can't fit you into their mold no matter how much they try to break you, if they give up on you- they're the ones that are wrong. You have to be what you want. You have to be able to leave them behind."
She kissed him firmly. She was a little shaky, but otherwise doing fine. "If they love you so long as you are a certain thing that's called conditional love and it doesn't have any place in raising a child. You have to accept that you deserve better even if it means leaving family behind. A friend of mine once told me that, now I'm telling you. I could love you unconditionally-"

It was both a swift and gradual process, the change. It started in the beds of his fingernails, though that couldn't be seen now with the lacquer in place, and spread outward- his hands, his arms, blooming over his chest unseen below his clothes and finally creeping over his neck and face until even the small part where his hair fell to the sides of his face showed a deep sapphire blue. His eyes, however, turned two-toned red, and the what color lingered over his lips was a faint reddish purple.
Aside from this, and a few intricate patterns that rose up on his face in natural lines, nothing changed. No new limbs, no bones changing shape, no tentacles.

She gasped, eyes growing huge, and slowly lifted her hands to his face, tentatively touching the raised pattern on his forehead, then slowly cupping his face.

"....no, I meant."
She looked a little anguished herself.
"....this is uncomfortably hot."
