"One doesn't have to probe to see it-"

"Really," she said uncomfortably. But before she could go into the morals of questioning it, it occurred to her, unwillingly, that Megan had been questioning his own motives for much less reason the night before... and that the thing with Veidt was probably why, so Lukas did have a reason beyond nosiness to talk about this.
"I'm... sure it's none of my business," she said, it taking a lot of restraint to not just talk about her own theories and conclusions. "But I do hope it doesn't last. He doesn't reciprocate, it's obvious, and.... let's just say it can't be helping her chances of finding someone else."

"Either that or she'll kill him," he said simply.

"....I don't know, she doesn't usually threaten men who ignore her, just the ones that don't," Teja said weakly.

"Ah."
This was useful.

"Once she was... talking to me about being... frustrated," Teja said, "and then in the next breath noticed a man near us looking at her and threatened to.... manually castrate him if he came any closer. You know, I'm not sure why I thought going to a party with her was a good idea-"

"And she works for Veidt?" Lukas asked, nearly laughing.

"Yes," said Teja, glancing back at him. "Christ, you're so tall, I can't believe I spent as much time worrying about what I was wearing today as I did, you're not going to be able to see anything but the top of my head-"

"Would you prefer being carried?"

She started to laugh, blushing furiously. "No - oh, no-"
As luck would have it, she stepped right into a puddle of freezing water and recoiled, accidentally jerking his arm a bit. She shook her foot, praying the water hadn't seeped right through.
"Ugh, of course there would be a hidden pool of water right where people walk-"

The briefest flash of OH SHIT passed over his face.
"They must be common around here, though-" he said, hurrying her along. "Now, Veidt himself, what's his story?"

"It soaked through my boot naturally- To the best of my knowledge, or at least as told by his snarky secretary, Veidt was a rich New York kid whose parents died when he was 17, he gave away his entire fortune to charity and travelled in the footsteps of Alexander the Great, took drugs in the desert and decided to become a superhero. He was successful at this and at everything else he tried, and then when he retired the costume in the seventies he was already a very successful businessman. He runs charities, is a household name, he helped GeneCo find a cure for that organ failure disease and would have been Largo's heir before Largo lost it and got the government to legalize organ repossession - and he's still in perfect health, with the physique of a God and very little grey, at age forty-seven."
She pulled some wind-whipped hair from her face. "He doesn't have children, so like, last spring he met this girl with honest-to-god superpowers, named Micaela, and she's ambitious and such so he makes her his ward and starts building her up as part of everything as though she were his daughter from the start, and then a Repo Man tries to kill them and kills his secretary and he loses his right hand and then has it mechanically replaced. And then, she up and vanishes and it's rumored to be GeneCo behind it but no one finds any evidence, and it's very hard on him. Then a little bit after that the media found out that the girl he was seeing has.... boy-parts, basically, and she's like thirty years younger than him, and then they got married, but yesterday Megan told me he doesn't even know where she is right now so it sounds like that wasn't a lasting thing. I mean, Veidt's a good man, in a way a lot of people only pretend to be, but.... well.... "
She sucked on her lip. "I guess it's hard to tell how much of how he treats Megan is his view of people and how much is his view of Megan. I was... actually yesterday you interrupted me getting mad at him about that, but given her behavior toward him when she got drunk it could just be her."

"Smartest man in the world," he mused. "I wonder how much that counts for when the world's full of fools to start with."

"That's an accurate thing to say," she laughed. "Though I hate to be a bother, but to my knowledge that title comes less from philosophy and more from him just plain being really freaking intellectual, to the point where his ability to calculate in his head is practically its own superpower. But, yes. Your point stands. Why do you want to be a politician, by the way, given that point? Also: keep that opinion to your damn self because voters are not fond of that kind of thing, and, um, being English will just make you sound doubly pretentious if you say that, sorry."

"I suppose it's good to have him as a tentative ally and not an opponent, at any rate. Bit surprised he's never run for anything himself."
