They walked down the sidewalk a bit slowly at first, taking in their surroundings--surroundings which could be described as a delightful disorder. Stately carriages, some with heraldic crests on them, rattled past, ladies in gentlemen, most wearing the fashions of the European late 19th century, strolled past, talking as calmly as if nothing was amiss.
The Doctor kept his fingers twined around his sonic, but resisted the urge to whip it out and run any more scans. It was best to keep quiet and play the observer for now. There was a church of the 17th century--before it got its Napoleonic additions. And there was that famous pastry shop--that had been opened at the same time Queen Victoria visited Paris.
"Puzzles!" He spun round to confront the two girls behind him. "Of course! Why didn't I see it before? It's just like a puzzle--or--puzzles!"

"Like, um, a bunch of different puzzles, all stuck together? But instead of puzzles it's bits of time and places, and--" She gasped as she spied someone walking past. "That was--"
Mr. Darcy. Literally, Matthew Macfayden's face on a man in full regency clothing looking dour and walking by with Kiera Knightley--Elizabeth Bennett--on his arm.
They both gave her an odd look.

"Yeah?" she called out. "Well, I thought to you guys were weird too! EHLE/FIRTH FOR THE WIN!"
She quickly tightened her arm around Micaela's. "Aaaaand we're walking..." she said as she started walking faster.

"Rachel!" Micaela turned bright pink. "Sorry, she didn't mean that, dunno what she's talking about!" She called this over her shoulder to the Darcys, who were briskly continuing in the other direction. "Also, I liked that movie. Thought they did a good job considering the format," she said to Rachel.

But the Doctor's mind was racing, "You know how it is, when you go and open several great boxes with puzzles in them, and you dump them all out on the floor," he continued to talk while walking backward in front of the girls, "and then you can't find some of the pieces, for some of the puzzles, but you put it together anyway, using pieces that aren't from the right puzzles. But they fit anyway! Because they're the right shape! So you do have your whole puzzle--and it fits perfectly--but the picture--" he whirled round now, facing in the right direction and drawing a sharp breath as he took in the city, "the picture doesn't make any sense!"

"That... has never happened to me," she commented. "Um, so, is anything wrong? Or is it just... really, really weird?"

"I feel like that metaphor is kinda funky 'cause-- ah forget it."
"Hey! Check that out! Is that a 747?" she said, pointing to the plane in the sky.

"They're ... not even looking. This is normal."

"Yes, " The Doctor glanced at the passerby, noticing the range of dress covered over 500 years of human fashion easily, "that's because this is normal for them, this is their world. And we're a part of it now."

"Reality and fiction all co-existing in one impossible universe. Have you seen something like this before?"

"No, but reality--can become fiction, and fiction can become reality--it's like they criss-cross..."He furrowed his brow and made a motion with his fingers as though following the path of knitting needles, " and they've become one big ball of wibbly-wobbly, spacey-wacey..."
The Doctor turned and peered up and down the street, "Every single brick in this place is built on a paradox--yet it all makes sense."

Micaela was texting her downstairs neighbor to please close her door when she realized she had cellphone service and let out a snort of disbelieving laughter. "I have four bars."
She looked around, suddenly giddy more than anything. "Well let's look around! Go to a cafe, sit in a park, listen to someone play music."

"Oh dang, don't tell me it's one of those relativity things."
Rachel quickly went into her pocket and checked her phone. She couldn't help but laugh. "I guess Verizon wasn't kidding when they had the best service."
She paused for a second. "Yeah, I think I hear someone playing Muse in a store nearby," she said, quirking an eyebrow.

"Muse. Early 21st century." The Doctor had now whipped out his screwdriver and ran another scan. " I'm detecting more signs of technology--your time," he jabbed a finger at the two girls, " but also some slightly more advanced readings."
