"I would think it rude to comment on the Lady Elizabeth's imminent reduced circumstances, sir," Micaela noted airily. She marched past surprisingly haughtily given she was carrying a toddler.

They entered the manor house, where the servants quickly offered them refreshments, though they hadn't had to walk the miles everyone assumed, the food and drink were still refreshing.
The Doctor leaned over at the table and whispered to Micaela, "Be ready when I give the signal, we have some work to do."

"... what is the signal and what am I supposed to be doing? Are there more time dudes?"

"You just do--what I do. Remember, follow the leader!" The Doctor whispered. He rose, made some vague excuses, and headed in the direction of the kitchens. Several moments later there were loud shrieks and the clatter of metal.

She was going to assume that was the signal. A cry of exasperation and she hurried off after him, terrified of what she was going to find.

"No! No! Micaela!" He waved his hands at her like a farmer's wife shooing chicks, ignoring the semi-hysterical scurrying maids and dishes on the floor."Go out--create a diversion--just like I did!"

"What?" A half-baked idea popped into her head, harebrained and flawed in so many places. She grinned hugely. "Five minutes, give me five minutes."
Micaela found the hiding spot first--a linen cupboard in Elizabeth's very room. A huge pile of sheets to hide behind pleased the little girl immensely, because the whole house was going to play hide-and-seek, and she was going to win, and Micaela knew where she was so she was safe in the tiny space.
"But you mustn't make any noise, and never tell them I knew where you were, alright? Never." Furious, if bleary, nodding. Micaela anticipated she'd probably fall asleep in there, curled up in a sort of nest of linen.
Within two minutes the whole house was in uproar, searching for her. Every single person available was enlisted in the search, which would include the outbuildings as well as the manor. Micaela promised she'd check in Elizabeth's room.

The kitchen---as did most kitchens regardless of era or galaxy--had a back exit. The Doctor moved through it quickly, and was soon out in the yard and heading toward the clump of trees where he had left the TARDIS.
It was quiet inside the TARDIS, except for the usual peaceful humming that took the place of the engines rumblings when she was in rest. It took him a bit to find what he needed, but finally he had triumphantly dragged several trunks out to the control room.
"There you are, " He murmured as he scooped a polygonal metal object out of the last trunk and added it to the small mountain of equipment beside him, "my perfect little counter-reactors."
Lugging the equipment, piece by piece out of the TARDIS and a short distance outside of the grove of trees, took quite a bit more time.
And sweat. And it involved an irritating amount of heat and bugs as well. He had returned to the TARDIS for one of the last items when he checked the scanner and spotted several figures, local farmers by their garb, approaching the trees.
With the final sabatory relay under his arm, he hastened out and waved to them. "Ahoy! My--good men, my very good fellows. Just the men I wanted!"
The Doctor fumbled in his coat pocket, sometimes he carried period currency, and sometimes he didn't. This time he turned up a half-melted silver piece, which he brandished quickly. "I have a job for you. Oh--do I ever have a job for you."
"Yes sir?" A man who seemed to be their leader took off his cap and bowed his head to him, "Anything for a servant of--his majesty sir."
The others stared at him, until a nudge and a look from the first man prompted them to doff their caps as well, and there were murmurs of "Sir, yes, your servant sir." But despite their respectful posture, the Doctor noted the glint of suspicion in their eyes.
"Yes! Well, now--that's what I call service." He hefted the weight under his arm uncomfortably, "I need you to pick up these, "he gestured at the pile of equipment, "and be careful with them mind you, and you will deposit them all around the estate, where I tell you."
"Yes sir," Said the leader, "But--with all due respect sir, is there a reason for it sir? We don't doubt sir, that the king's servant--knows what he's doing--but if it's ought we could help with sir--"
"Yes! These objects are for--"The Doctor's eyes flickered over the group, "--for the protection of pri--her, young, ladyship, Elizabeth. They've been--blessed you see by the--not the Pope, the other fellow, who, hates the Pope, and that the king--approves of very much."
"As long as they're distributed in a perfect polychoron around the estate, she should be fine." The men began sorting out the objects among themselves, and followed him as he headed back to the estate.

She'd been watching for him from the window, and went downstairs when he began heading in to catch him at the door.
"Okay, I've got the whole house looking for something they'll never find, what are you doing?"

"Oh, just setting up a counter reactionary relay network." The Doctor mounted the stairs, carrying a large sack in his hand.
Glancing over his shoulder he perhaps saw her expression and sighed. "Oh yes, twenty-first century, Micaela, do you ever listen to the radio? Then you know how it is when you really want to get one channel--but can't--because something else is interfering with the signal--and then you get either something you don't like or nothing at all--well this is a bit like that," he pulled a thick, flat, silvery polygon from the sack, "it can detect and stop any technology that's" a gleam had crept into his eyes, "gotten a little ahead of itself?"
"Well no, not this," he stared at the many sided metal object in his hand, "this is just a hub to relay the signal." He dropped it back in the bag.
"This," he plunged his hand in and pulled out a glittering object as many sided as a finely carved engagement diamond, but instead of being icy white, it was clear as glass, with a rainbow gleaming in each tiny, transparent prism, "is what stops anything outside of this era from being activated, if a rogue time agent tries to materialize in here, he'll find himself bounced right back where he belongs!"
He continued up several more steps, "Now, of course they can try to come in the usual way, but--they can't go out the same way--guards'll stop them, same thing if they try to teleport out, this stops any vortex manipulator in its tracks."
"Well, not tracks, because--they don't really have any tracks, the time vortex is a bit like space, no sound, nothing to leave prints on, but it'll keep it from activating."
"Time lord technology." The Doctor whispered, growing a bit more grave for a second, " There aren't many of these anymore. It helps keep history tidy."

At this point she thought it was just best to let him talk, and she kind of followed what he was saying, so she nodded and went along with it. He seriously was an alien. Like, really truly. Frankly she thought she was keeping up quite well, circumstances considered.
Something was up, though. Somehow he no longer had any access to Time Lord technology, so either he was cut off from them or there weren't any. Now wasn't question-time, though...
"Okay. Well, the whole house is--"
But someone hurried past and asked if Micaela had found her. She put on her best worried and frantic face, and responded in the negative. Back to the Doctor, face back to normal.
"I hid her. Are we ready to go? I'll need a few minutes to get her and convince them she was just hiding.

"Right! Excellent," He started back up the stairs, "Wait," he snapped around, "you hid her? You hid her where?"

"Shh! They don't know I did; I have them looking for her. And she's in a cupboard in her room," she whispered. "I wouldn't hide her and forget where I left her."

"What? Micaela, don't you understand?" He gripped her shoulders tightly, "I haven't set up the network yet! A time agent could materialize in her room right now! Don't let her out of your sight! Go! Go! Go!"
The Doctor released her and raced up the stairs with a loud clatter.

Crap. She took off up the stairs after him, heading for Elizabeth's room. She opened the cupboard and, sure enough, there Elizabeth was.
"She's fine," she said to the room in general, not too loudly so that nobody else heard. She was also asleep, which was a blessing for when Micaela had to move her back to her bed.
