It was a lovely room, with a distant ocean-view, and the waves could always be heard at night. Tonight was no exception, with a warm spring breeze drifting in through the open windows. Kat was brushing out her hair from its elaborate updo--standards were higher with the King here.
Which had been a ridiculous surprise. She was still sort of reeling.
((I'm just gonna keep making threads until the old threads go away))

There was a quick knock at her door before Lucrezia came in with a hairbrush of her own in hand. She was in her night gown as well and her fair hair was down and sans a headdress.
"I knew you wouldn't be asleep," she said quietly as she walked in.

"And I suspected you'd show up to tease me mercilessly," Kat said dryly, but with an affectionate smile.

She smiled too.
"Tease? I was thinking more along the lines of interrogation but teasing sounds like a good lot of fun," she said as she plopped down on the ground next to Kat's chair and began brushing her hair.
"So? Should I practice calling you Queen Catalina?" she giggled.

"Ugh, you're doing it all wrong--" Kat stole Lucrezia's brush and began brushing it herself. "And I had no idea the King held me in such high esteem, so you can stop smirking."
A small smile. "It is flattering, though."

Lucrezia's smirk turned into a laugh.
"Oh, Catalina. You would have to be deaf, dumb and blind not to notice his high opinion of you," she said, calling her bluff. "During dinner, I caught him looking at you at least half a dozen times and yesterday, during our little walk about the grounds, he was looking down from his window."

"Lucrezia, I couldn't possibly-- that is, the King... I am sure his affections will wane. He has a notoriously short attention span. I will enjoy it as long as it lasts, but I do not think he is very serious."

Lucrezia's smile faded and a thoughtful look took over.
"Kat," she started cautiously. "Do all men's affections behave thus?"

"Of course not," she reassured her friend, leaning down to hug Lucrezia around her neck. "They are not all faithful, Lucrezia, but there have to be some good ones. I don't think my father has looked at another woman since he met my mother, and that was when they were eight." She sighed a little. "It just... depends."
She laughed. "And maybe I'm not giving his Majesty much of a chance."

Lucrezia thought for a moment longer.
"Could you love someone who wasn't faithful?"

"I... I don't know. I've never tried. I suppose... I suppose you can love somebody even if you don't want to. Even if they break your heart. But I couldn't stay if I felt I could be replaced, even if I loved him."

She considered it all then smiled.
"Whoever my husband will be, I know he'll always be faithful," she said with a happy sigh as she lied down on the grown. "Papa would make sure he loved me."

Kat was not so sure, but she smiled and confirmed, "I'm sure he will."
Crushing a fourteen-year-old's spirit was not on the list for today.
"Now, what should I wear tomorrow? I'm going riding."

"Oh, the yellow one with the jeweled bodice," she replied immediately. "That or the lavender with the slightly puffy sleeves."

"Why the yellow? I'm always so worried it clashes with my hair..."
