As Kat re-entered the de Winter apartments with new mail, she beelined for the small sitting room near her bedroom, where she and Lucrezia could usually be found.
"Lucrezia!" she called, in case she was in one of the nearby rooms with Cesare. "Nana's responded!"

Lucrezia had been talking to her brother when she heard Kat call her name. She come running in with her skirt in her hands.
"Ohh, what did she say?" she said.

"I don't know yet--" she opened it up and began to scan it. "She says yes! She'd be happy to let us rent the house, and she wants us to come visit!"

She screamed excitedly and hugged her friend tightly.
"This is wonderful!" she said, jumping. "When do we leave?"

Cesare got to the doorway in time to see their happy little exchange. He was quite unimpressed and found no need to hide it. After giving Kat and quick look of disdain, he walked away.

Her enthusiasm matched Lucrezia's, but when Cesare came and went, Kat frowned. "You know, I don't think your brother likes me very much." And she hadn't given him any reason.

She frowned, confused.
"What? Don't be silly, Kat" she said reassuringly. "I think he's quite taken with you."
An idea hit her.
"Do you think Cesare could come? Oh, wouldn't that be grand? That way, I can prove that he likes you!"

"I... of course." Kat couldn't really say no to Lucrezia. "I'm sure Nana will love him."

"Thank you," she said, giving Kat a quick kiss on her cheek. "I'll go and check if I received any mail. I'm expecting something for a dear friend of mine back home. Would you mind asking Cesare?"

That was a terrible idea, but she nodded and rose to go find Cesare.

Cesare was in a nearby room, idly playing with fruits that had been put there in a bowl for decoration. He turned around when he heard someone come in. When he saw that it was Kat, he turned back tot he bowl of fruit.

Ugh. Did he have to be such a child? She curtseyed.
"I know you don't like me, Signor Borgia, but you could at least face me when I speak to you," she said dryly. It was useless beating around the bush and speaking with a courtier's smile.

He bit back a snarl and turned around.
"Miss de Winter," he began politely, if not too politely. "It would make no sense to dislike someone I barely know."
But the end of his sentence ended coldly.
"Now that I'm facing you, what is you business?"

Kat's demeanor was not cold, but certainly not friendly. Friendliness had not worked on him in the beginning, so why continue?
"Your sister has asked me to extend my invitation to my grandmother's house at Manderley, in Cornwall. I add my own request that you put aside your own feelings, whatever they may be, and think of Lucrezia."
Her voice was just a touch softer when she continued, "she does not like to be long without you."

It didn't take long for him to decide. Lucrezia wanted him there and he wasn't going to say no to her.
"Of course," he said curtly. "When do we leave?"
