"I- what?"

"He only just told me," he said, breathing heavily. "He told me before New Years, the... day before we got married, I think it was. After that first trip to Karnak... he almost poisoned me."

"W-w-why in the hell would he do that?!"

"Because of what he was planning." He said flatly. "So I wouldn't live to see it."

"I can see his reasoning, but god-" Dan took a deep breath.
Really, what had Adrian become?

"Oh, don't worry," he said, bitterness more than apparent. "He loved me too much to go through with it."

"The fact that he even thought about it, that's disgusting."

There was a pause, and then he said, quietly, "I was sick that day, and he brought me tea for my throat, and when I was about to drink it he knocked it out of my hand. Later I... later he told me... what I just told you."
A lump formed in his throat recalling all of this.
"He bought me some fancy shoes the next day, I guess to make up for it..."

"Shoes don't make up for-" Dan almost growled "I'm sorry."

"...do you know what happened the day before?"
He didn't really wait for a response. Dan obviously didn't know; he hadn't meant the question literally.
"Well, I... showed up at his office, dressed up. As a - a woman, you know. Because i thought then we could appear in public together. Well - I - I wore Micaela's Meritites dress. I didn't think anyone'd notice! It was under my coat."
He audibly swallowed.
"He was really mad, and I got - I got really upset, I guess, I don't remember anything I said, but he was so angry, and then he had to go to a meeting, and he locked me in the office bathroom. Honestly, I swear I don't remember much, I think i was out part of the time. He came back and took me to his place and he tried to feed me and dance with me and then... I guess I felt happier, dancing."
When he spoke again it was a little hard to tell the words through his tears. "He said he wanted to take care of me for the rest of my life. When he was planning on killing me! When the next day he-"
He sniffled. "Hold, hold on a second -" He rolled over to reach for a tissuebox on the nightstand, and clumsily blew his nose. "Sorry."

It was hard to hear it all honestly, he'd been thinking that their relationship was all peaches and cream, that it was all a fairytale, but it wasn't and never had been.
Taking off his glasses he felt around his eyes, the circles underneath them seemed to have grown ten fold since Karnak, even though he was out and about working again, he never seemed to get any sleep. Half of it was thinking how he could have changed things, if he would have been quicker, smarter, the other half was spent thinking how he could make things right for the people who had been involved, for Megan and Adrien.
How he could have changed things with Adrien was living with them.
The what if's were killing him.
"You don't need to apologize, none of this is your fault."

"Yeah, but none of it's yours, either, hon," he sniffled, appreciating having someone to talk to, especially someone like Dan who was upset on his behalf - if a bit too upset. He loved all his old friends, but he knew they'd have all suggested ways he could have been better to Adrian or given a low whistle - 'that's rough,' would be what they meant by it, 'but that's life.'

"Maybe" he sighed "I could have helped."

"Dan, you didn't - I mean-" He flushed, not that anyone could see. "I mean, you barely knew me back then. I mean, we only met the once." But saying that felt weird, because why was he confiding in him so much now if they'd never even tried to get to know each other.
He sat up a little straighter.
"Dan, um. Can I see you? I just need... I just need to talk."

Dan looked at the clock, he was going to go out on patrol tonight, but-
"Of course."
