Sitting on the steps of the opera house Isa leaned against a post, pondering how her life had become so busy.
And so lonely.
Taking a big sigh she leaned back, hoping John and Hazel would be there soon for her latest session.

Coming through a service door, Jesse eyed Isa and grinned.
"Well if it isn't Ms. Isa Handle, haven't seen you about in a long while, how ya been?"

Looking up with a start, Isa sighed, returning the smile "You scared the dickens out of me Mr. James."
Isa had met Jesse when she sang at the opera, he had just started working there. At first she thought that the name just had to be a coincidence, there was no way that this was the actual Jesse James they told stories of back home.
But sure as shit, she saw a picture of him in one of her books, and it was him. She knew this time line she was in was all odd, but at this time in history he was suppose to be in America.
So she brought it up to him, being the way that she was, and bluntly asked him how the hell he was there.
And he told her, she couldn't believe it, not at all. But he was there, and god knowing he was a different man than the books described him to be.

He plopped down next to her, smelling like grease and dust and wiped his hands on a towel. "Sorry bout that, didn't realize you weren't paying attention" he replied with a laugh.

She patted him softly on the knee "It's all right really, just off in my own little world I guess."

"Speakin of which, how is that world?"
The last time he saw her, she was still mourning the death of her friend. All she'd say was that it was murder and she planned on finding the bastard that did it.

"Oh god, you don't even want to know. I've worked double shifts at the hospital for a week and a half. Four babies born in two days-" she turned to him with a smile "speaking of which, how's Diana and the baby, is she going to be able to come back to work soon?"

Jesse's face visibly fell "She's still ain't feelin up to par, the babies all right, doin' what babies do. Gurgling, eatin, spittin up and makin' a mess of himself."

"That's what babies do" she laughed, for a moment recalling her own son back in her time. "But he's healthy and that's what matters."

He replied with a sad cough of a laugh "Na, but I'll be fine, I- well-"
Shit
Jesse never could lie to Isa, not from the moment she called him out on his past. She just had a way of knowing.
"You ever realize, maybe the life you got, ain't the life you wanted?"

She nodded.
"I told you, the life I wanted is back in 1944 in Edwards New York."
She smiled "Sometimes you gotta accept it all, you gotta a new baby, and a good woman at your side. I know it all seems like too much, but it'll get easier, it always does. Until the boy grows up and wants to start doing things all on his own, then it'll be hard again."

Jesse scrunched up his face in to a smile at her final comment and nodded "You're right, I know it."

She turned her face sideways to look at him better, his face was telling a different story.
"But that's the problem isn't it?"
