"No, no..." *he murmured.* "If anything, it is mine," *he said in a croaky voice.*

*Laurie took her face gently between his hands and forced her to look at him.* "Listen to me, Arielle--there was no way you could have prevented this. It's all...it's all my own doing." *He tore himself away, unable to bear the agonizing pain in her eyes. He paced the length of the room and leaned against the full-length mirror mirror, one hand on either side of the frame.*

*Arielle looked up, the lights illuminating the tearstreaks on her cheeks exactly like in the PotO movie and Emmystine looks up at Gerik after his total spazz attack and the tear tracks are, like...glowing. W-w-what a-are y-y-you tal-talking a-about? T-T-Teddy?

"If I hadn't..." *Teddy turned around, then turned back to the mirror, unable to look directly at her.*' "If I hadn't...appeared--I was lost in the murderer being found--it meant I could speak to you--you could see me...I never considered..." *He shook his head.* "If I hadn't frightened you so, you would not have fallen as you did. This is all my fault."

"Preposterous, my dear, stairs are a necessity--it would be impossible to navigate our way through most modern architecture without them." *He shook his head in torment.* "It is entirely my own doing--and I shall never forgive myself for abusing you so, and thus I know I cannot expect you to forgive me." *He straightened and looked down at Arielle with an unreadable expression disguising his immense inner self-loathing at that very moment. After a lengthy pause, he spoke.* "Naturally I'll agree to an annulment as soon as you wish it." *He strode over to the open doorway and looked back for only an instant.* "I'm so sorry, Arielle. You can never know how much." *Teddy left the room, shutting the door quietly behind him and walking swiftly down the hall, no longer fighting back his tears as the sound of Arielle's muffled sobbing grew more and more faint.*

((*jaw drops* But- but...))
*Arielle gasped, got up, and ran down the hall after him, throwing herself at his legs to stop him from walking away and looking up at him hopelessly, her huge brown eyes filled with tears* D-d-do y-yo-you w-w-want a-an a-an-annu-annul-annulm-annulme-annulmen-annulment? *Her huge eyes begged him to say no, looking gigantic and dark against her shockingly pale face*

*Teddy drew her to her feet and held her by the shoulders.* "I only want you to be happy--and somehow I think you'd stand a better chance of that if I weren't around to mess things up."

"Alright, alright..." *Teddy stroked her hair and held her.* "I don't want you to have any regrets, Arielle. You don't know it yet, you're too upset right now--but you don't need me anymore."

Yes, I do! *Arielle's head flew up as she took a step back, her face angry though her eyes were still filled with tears* Don't you understand, Teddy? If it hadn't been for you, I would be long dead! *She wiped a hand angrily across her eyes, though it had no effect but to start more tears flowing down her cheeks* If you want an annulment, then I will set you free. But I meant it when I said I loved you! And I believed you when you said you loved me! But then...I have been wrong before. If you want an annulment, just say the word and I'll set you free from me and the terrible luck I seem to bring with me everywhere I go.

"Arielle..." *Teddy held her.* "I love you more than anything--which is why I want to make certain you're not making some kind of hysterical mistake in tricking yourself into thinking you love me back. I couldn't bear to be the cause of such misery--I've already done so much to destroy your happiness."

*Arielle allowed her body to relax for a moment against the comfort of Teddy's body, her head tipping towards his shoulder again, before straightening up* Stop it. Stop questioning. If I didn't love you, I wouldn't have tried to bring you back, and I wouldn't have had nightmares about your death, and I wouldn't have let Irene investigate. *Her eyes softened slightly* And I wouldn't be standing here right now. *She kissed him gently, a few more tears slipping out of her eyes as she closed them slowly*
