"Hey..."
*Alex reached for her, trying to turn her towards him.*
"Not your fault. Shh, Lizzie. I know how... protective brothers can be. What choice did you have? To let this brute have his way? Hardly. So where's the blame?"

*Lizzie turned to him but didn't lift her reddened eyes to his. She pursed her lips for a moment and suddenly pressed against him, burying her face in his neck. Her words were quiet, but held a tremble.*
"But it is my fault...I wasn't supposed to be out. I can't help it. There's somethin' in me that just ain't right. It's like I can't do what I'm told."
*She pulled back slightly and dared a pitiful glance up.*
"Do 'ya think that makes me a bad person?"

*Alex would have laughed, had the situation felt less tense. It was Lizzie's belief that disobeying her family made her "wrong"; Alex could not help but think that made her more right than she knew.*
"No, I don't. Do you know what, Lizzie? Girls--and boys, for that matter--have been 'going out' for centuries against express orders and making the world better for it. It's only natural--you're young, and high-spirited, and it got you into trouble, once. But it also got Columbus to America, and Darwin to the Galapagos, and Cleopatra to the throne. I've made my own mistakes, but I don't think I'm any the worse for it. It's regrettable, true, that it led to... what it did, but it's no reflection on you. Just human nature."
*Alex had felt lost like this, and not so long ago. She knew what Lizzie felt. And she put her arms around her tenderly.*
"There's no rule says that what we're told is always right. We have to learn that for ourselves."

*Lizzie snuggled against him and was quiet for a while, taking in what he said. It kinda made sense. That was a bit odd.*
"Jeez, Mister....you sure ain't like the boys back home...if it ain't too rude of me to say so."
*Her breathing calmed, but she didn't let go.*
"Thanks. I hope I didn't spoil yer evenin'."

*Alex smiled to herself.*
"No, it isn't and I'm not. Though what I know about them, so far, is none too complimentary, so it's just as well."

*Lizzie laughed lightly and glanced behind him.*
"So...what else is down here that you were wanting to show me?"
*She smiled delicately, her spirits lifting.*

"Are you referring to things I can show you just as well anyplace else? Or sights native to this particular environment?"

*Lizzie couldn't help but smile a little coyly.*
"Well...I dunno. Whatever it is that...you'd think I'd outta see...with you..."
*She bit her lip which did little to lessen her impish grin.*

*Alex laughed. She loved the way Lizzie just could suppress her love of life, the way her eyes crinkled when she laughed. She was caught by a sudden whim.*
"Lizzie, how would you like to go to a party with me? Very nice people, and I'll vouch for your safety."

*Lizzie's eyes lit up, but then she sobered a bit.*
"I'd havta check with..."
Screw him.
*She smiled brightly.*
"I'd love to! When?"

*Alex smiled sheepishly.*
"Actually, it's tonight. I'd been planning to go, until... Well, I thought perhaps you'd enjoy it, too. Is that too short notice?"

*Lizzie shook her head and grinned.*
"All the better."
Jake already knows I'm going out tonight. Don't have to tell him it's to a party, long as I don't drink too much.
"Will I need somethin' with more frills?"

*Alex glanced at her.*
"Not unless you want to. Our host, Rochester, is quite easygoing; and if you won't take it amiss, I think simple and straightforward suit you. You have no need of adornment."

*Lizzie shrugged.*
"I trust your opinion. If this is fine, then it's fine by me."

"Shall we, then?"
*Alex offered Lizzie her arm as they made their way back to the surface...*
[AND TO THE PARTY]
