"I don't make excuses for him...not really. The way he ended himself was stupid and weak and selfish. I'll never forgive him for it." But still.
He heaved a huge sigh and sunk down in the bed again, his head turning away from Javert to gaze at the empty space next to him. Yes, he had allowed Lee to occupy it a few times now, but the room wasn't Lee's to share, and he still did not allow his lover to come and go into it as he pleased. And of course, Lee had never been into Ciaran's room at all, which remained locked save for when Jason opened it each morning to glance it's lonely interior mindlessly before going to work.
His entire house was empty of him and filled with ghosts.

"I do not doubt that," Javert murmured, reaching out to stroke Jason's cheek with a tenderness that surprised even the inspector himself. The man was, after all, no longer in mortal danger.
"I suddenly realize there is one part of your query that I have yet to answer..." he could hear himself say, almost distantly. "Why I am not married."

The initial contact caused the muscles to bunch and tense under his skin, ready to strike for only the briefest of moments--certainly, it must have been the morphine still in his system that allowed him to relax again without such a bold reaction, but he did keep his face turned away, and muttered his response.
"You're married to your work, of course. No time for a wife, certainly none for children. And I doubt very much you would take a whore."

"Four out of five... not a bad score. There is also my lack of interest."
If there was any justice in the word - and Javert was sure that there was - he wouldn't have to elaborate any further than this. Jason was after all a very capable officer. He withdrew his hand and stood.
"I think you're capable of managing on your own, for now..."

Well now, that was a revelation. Sort of.
By the time he'd turned his face back to the man the contact was broken and Javert was getting up. Jason watched him stand, his jaw tightening before he blurted out, rather non-sensically.
"But it's going to rain, and you don't even have your hat."
He winced at his own words and the color rose in his cheeks and ears. What a thing to say.

Javert frowned as he looked at Jason, utterly puzzled by this statement.
Carefully he extended a hand to touch the other man's face once more... or rather, to feel his forehead. Could the fever be returning?
When all there was to be felt was skin and a noticeable lack of heat, Javert cocked his head a bit to the side as his hand dropped from the other inspector's forehead once more.
"I beg your pardon?"

He cleared his throat a bit, his cheeks still burning and cast his eyes to one side, keeping his head straight.
"Don't you think it looks like rain...?" he muttered unsurely. It was certainly more stomachable than 'please stay'.

"Well... I suppose it might?"
Javert was rather unsure of what he was supposed to do with this piece of information.
Perhaps it would rain... how did it matter? So he would get a little wet, what else was he supposed to do? Sit here for the rest of the evening because of the slight chance that the event might occur?
It took Javert's brain a few seconds to reach the 'Oooh...' moment.

Jason plowed ahead, puffing out the breath he'd been holding and adding rather quickly "Yes, and you didn't bring your hat along, we left so quickly, and it would be unfortunate if you caught ill on my account."

"Yes, I can hardly go out into the potential rain without my hat." Javert nodded and sat down once more.
Sweet mother of... did he just actually SAY that?

The younger man sighed and relaxed, the stupidity of Javert's last remark certainly indicating the man had taken his intended meaning.
"Indeed," he said, strongly and added a quiet "Thank you," before laying still a few moments.
He thought about asking Javert to light the lamp, the dimness of the room now consuming the shapes around him, but then thought better of it, realizing that perhaps talking to this man would be easier in the dark. For both of them.
"Did you ever have anyone, then?"

"Have anyone?" Javert frowned for a brief moment before realization dawned once again. "Oh, right..."
The older man swallowed. "No, I can't say I have, to be honest..."
It was one of the consequences of being both married to your job and being far from the most suave person in the world. There had simply been no time and no will for matters of the heart... or the body, for that matter.

"What--not ever?" he smirked--here was something he could lord over Javert. At least he wasn't a virgin. "And how old are you? Christ."

"Not ever. I had work to do... and I'm 46, hardly as old as Christ."
Javert crossed his arms. He didn't mind his lack of experience in that particular field much. From what he'd seen and heard it was all a rather messy business with an ending no more satisfying than the capture of a criminal after a good chase. Not that that made him... well, you know... but still, it gave the inspector all the satisfaction he needed.

Jason blinked.
"You're serious. Never? Nevermind, I don't want to know." he waived the idea off.
"I was married once, you know. I have a son in Marseilles, three years old. Never seen him. Men...just once." On his last birthday, with Lee.
