"Well, no..." *she said with a shrug. She didn't have any real reason to dislike him.*

"And yet there is something about him that irks you?" *She shrugged.* "Fair enough." *It was growing dark, and Giry glanced about.* "Are you hungry?"

*She bit her lip.*
"A bit, though I should be getting back. Mama doesn't know I'm out."

"Let us get you a bite and something warm to drink, and then you shall go home. You're old enough to be out on your own for a while. And no harm shall come to you by me."
*Giry gestured to a small but cozy cafe not far from them.*
"Do you like hot chocolate?"

"Then come," *said Madame Giry with a wide smile, taking the girl by the hand and going to the cafe. When they were seated, Madame Giry ordered hot chocolate for them both as well as a plate of sweet and rich French pastries, some dusted with sugar, others sprinkled with rich curls of chocolate, some filled with sweetened cream or sticky jam.*

*Pina looked a little overwhelmed and sipped her chocolate shyly.*
"You didn't have to get so much!"

"Thank you."
*She paused, a bit awkwardly. Talking to new people wasn't exactly something she'd had much practice with.*
"How do you know my father?"

"Depends on which canon you ask. Long ago, I led him to the Opera, to find a haven for him."

"Oh..."
*It was hard to imagine her father living anywhere else.*
"Where was he before?"

"I know not the particulars, but I had heard Persia..."

"Oh, wow! I didn't know that- he doesn't talk a lot about, you know, stuff."
*She knew very little about her father's past- She didn't even know who Christine was.*

"Indeed. He does not say much that is not necessity. Much of the past brings him pain."

*Pina carefully picked up a sugar covered pastry and took a slow bite.*
"I know. It's a little upsetting," *she said awkwardly.*
