"Yes," Jon intoned. "Though I will feel it less than you. My life, as much as it can be called life, is on Laurel now."

"There's still so much work to be done-"
He stopped suddenly.

Megan had the gun again.
"Who's to say you'll get to do any of that?"

Adrian did not have the patience for this.
He walked very calmly, very deliberately toward her.
"You don't know when to stop, do you?"

"Maybe I won't miss your head this time."

"You'd kill me? Risking an investigation that could make everything I just bought with the blood of thousands fall apart?" Adrian asked, tilting his head deceptively mildly.

"Simple. You died in Times Square."

Adrian opened his mouth, but then shut it just as quickly and looked away, speechless for once.

Megan slowly lowered the gun.

Adrian slowly began walking down the steps to the main floor of the great hall, looking like a sleepwalker.
"Don't let them have died in vain. Every night, I close my eyes, and all I can see are the faces..."
He turned to look at them again.
"Do you think I did this lightly? I can feel every death..."
His shoulders slumped. He looked positively defeated and sickly.
"It had to be done. For the sake of the future."

Dan was angry, he was angry and very confused.
He wanted to beat Adrian to death with his bare hands but-
"He's right."

Adrian and Megan both turned to stare at Dan.

Adrien looked at Dan, eyes wide.

He looked back at them, seemingly staring in to both of their eyes at once "I don't want to believe it as much as anyone else" he turned completely to Adrian "what you've done, you deserve to see those faces. But you're right, you're always right."
His hands shook with rage as he tried to contain himself.

"Yes," said Jon. "The logic is irrefutable. They do not have a choice. Further action on their part would mean the end of the species, as they know. They have merely been made to see... what has been obvious all along: that war would mean annihilation of the human race."
