Adrien shuddered.

Dan looked up to the televisions and stared.

"You mean-"
Adrian's breath hitched in his throat, and he grew pale and excited, like a sick person who has just been told they've begun to recover. He bolted away from Jon, dropping his bloodied cape in the process, and ran back to his chair to grab the universal control to the television sets.
He turned them on.
"-unspeakable horror-" "Krusciov è l'invio di aiuti ai sopravvissuti di New York-" "-an estimated 500,000 dead-" "Dr. Manhattan-" "Dokutāmanhattan wa ōkii chōbatsu baai de jinrui o obiyakashite iru-" "-Times Square in New York City-" "Ost und West in Trauer vereint heute Abend-" "Chertov novyĭ god segodnya v SSHA-"
The televisions were each showing a different picture, but they were all variants on the same theme: the New Year's crowd in Times Square, decimated and so soaked with the blood and gore of those Jon had just killed that it was hard to tell the survivors from their surroundings. Medics were arriving in haz-mat suits and setting up triage tents while people screamed for lost loved ones or fought against the doctors trying to pull them back for decontamination.
A few screens showed pullaway shots of what Times Square looked like now. The buildings themselves were spattered with something thick and mostly reddish nearly two stories up. Others showed shaky footage of Jon materializing before the crowd, monstrously huge and lifting his hand...

Dan fell to his knee's "My god."

Adrien gave a panicked scream and started to breath rapidly without taking in any air, stumbling away from the sight so quickly he tripped and fell down the rest of the stairs, falling bruised and terrified at the bottom.

Megan stared in uncomprehending horror for a moment, before understanding struck.
She tried to swallow, but she couldn't manage it, and she promptly lurched forward onto her hands and knees and was sick on the floor.

Adrian stumbled back and tried to steady himself with the remnant of his right hand against the chair, but it didn't work.
This was all wrong. This was bloody. This was inelegant.
This was carnage.
He turned around, trembling and white-faced, and swung his maimed arm back at the screens, staring accusingly at Jon.
"You- this-"
He looked between all of them- Megan on her knees with vomit spilling from her mouth, Adrien lying in a heap at the foot of the stairs, inscrutable Rorschach standing tense and silent, Dan kneeling in horror- and then shouted at Jon, sounding nothing like his usual composed self:
"It wasn't meant to be like this-"

"But Adrian," said Jon, the disconnect between those words and his tone of voice as horrifying as the evidence of his success on the screens, "I have done only as you have asked me."

Dan looked up from the floor after a moment of thinking "It's not Jon's fault Adrian" he bellowed "all he did was do as you asked!"

Jon looked between them, though his expression did not change. He did not even look incredulous, or sound it, despite his words. "But it is better this way. They have seen what violence is. They will not dream of replicating it. And they will fear any threat of it, not just from me, but from themselves. Adrian, you have triumphed."

Adrian wasn't quite ready for that part yet. He scrambled over to Adrien.
"Adrien-"

Adrien started making little panic noises that would have been screams, but they only highlighted that he could hardly breathe.
