He couldn't think of any response to this. But he remembered it wasn't supposed to be a conversation. He came a little further into the room and held the gun still, slowly moving as though to circle him.
His heart hurt.

Adrian didn't flinch, or step back.
"Then shoot me," he said softly. "You're well within your rights. Dreiberg should be here soon, with Rorschach and the girl if the news from New York is any indication. I'm sure they could take you back to Paris."

"I'd be next."

"Not if you told them what happened. They'd believe you. Dan likes you very-"
Then the meaning settled in, and he momentarily looked aghast again.
"...no. No, Adrien, you have to stay alive-"

"I don't have to do a god damn thing!" he said, the steady and angry tone of his voice shocking even him. He lowered it again. "What am I going to do after you, hein? My next boyfriend would have to be a real monster to top this one. You don't think I could go back to someone like Marchetti, do you? That'd be a real step down." He laughed, high and brittle and wild-sounding.

"He never loved you like I do- do you know how hard it was to not just bring you here and watch the world end around us-"

"That's romantic."

"Would you have wanted that? Would you have wanted to starve to death here, alone, watching the screens display humanity's curtain call until the signals die too?"

"Oh, you know it."

Adrian stared. He looked utterly betrayed.
"Then- well. Fine. I can't stop you now."
He stepped a little closer.
"I don't deserve you, after all..."

"Hey, we're both murderers, right?" he said, almost casually, but almost as soon as he cocked the gun it was apparent his hands were shaking.
He blinked, and thereafter looked almost pleadingly at Adrian, as though if he could only change his mind in the last minute everything would be back to normal.

Adrian just looked at him apologetically and slowly raised his right hand to his forehead, tapping just above the space between his brows with the tip of his mechanical index finger.

Adrien let out a wet-sounding exhale sharply, appearing for a moment as though he were going to lose his balance.
"Don't mock me - do you think it's easy for me to do this? Do you think I can just forget everything all that easily?"
His eyes were bright and damp. "Don't you know why I'm doing this?"

"I'm not mocking you. I'm trying to make it less difficult- here, you're never going to get a clear shot holding it like that-"
