It had been one of those August days that was so hot you could feel yourself sweating through your clothes, even when it was only a t-shirt and shorts. Which, today, was decidedly not what she had been wearing.
Dinner had been almost insufferable from heat. Her parents had, as predicted, loved Olivier. Her father saw none of what had made him so unstable in his youth, and her mother was charmed as anyone. Wes seemed to have enjoyed the company, although Evie suspected he'd been reading under the table. In short, it had all gone according to plan.
But something was bothering Evie--bothering her like the heat was, ever-present and heavy. Just when you thought you could forget, it crept up on you again.
Thus, no matter what her mother and father said about decency, it was a short-shorts and loose t-shirt kind of night. She sat on her own windowsill, knees up against her chest as she stared out at the dark.

Laurent slowed his horse as he approached the Chateau, Olivier's babbling about the dinner still swirling around in his head, irritating him. It wasn't his cousin's blather that had sent him flying from the Estate, however--just the mere thought that Olivier might have in any way won over Evie was enough to drive him mad.
He'd been expecting to see her tonight, though perhaps not quite as he found her...not that he minded. He rather liked her modern ways, so much more interesting than the regular Parisian debutantes.
"Miss Bass, what a pleasure to see you again."

Of course he showed up when her shorts were practically underwear... she stopped pulling her hair into a ponytail and looked down at him from the second floor.
"Monsieur," she said, tired. "What unbearable heat this is."
It was sort of a joke in society that when there was an elephant in the room, you talked about the weather. Which was, in this case, somewhat unbearable. And there was an elephant. A huge one.

"It can be quite unbearable, yes." He responded, dismounting.
He was feeling a bit reckless tonight, which could mean anything was possible at the moment.
"Of course, there are ways of finding it not quite a bother."

"Do they involve me moving?"
It was sort of asking for a sexual innuendo.
"Don't move, you're too loud and you're near my parents' bedroom," she said, and made her way down the stairs as quickly as possible. Thank God for flagstone floors instead of wood, like they had in Paris. And New York.

With a faint smirk, he patted his horse's shoulder, waiting for Evie. Olivier could boast all he wanted about dinner conversation...he knew his cousin well enough to know that Olivier did not do such shenanigans as these with girls.

Upon her exit she went and sat down on a bench on the outskirts of the garden, almost reclaimed by the woods. She looked up, expecting he would join her, or at least walk in her direction.
"Alors."
((so.))

Hearing her voice, he made sure the horse was secure before following in the right direction and coming to the garden.
"Glad you could join me here on the ground." He said, grinning.

"Couldn't have you yelling at the window dramatically. Charles and Adrienne might hear."
Not that she had anticipated he'd make such a fool of himself. Olivier might, but then Olivier had the stamp of Bass approval. Which was why she liked Laurent.

He shrugged, joining her on the bench.
"I'm feeling reckless tonight. Who knows what foolishnees I might indulge in?"

"I'm not in the mood for foolishness." She'd had enough for one night--at the hands of her family, not Olivier, who was never anything less than gratingly considerate.
A look.

"Perhaps I worded that wrong...not so much foolishness, then, as heedless."

He wound an arm around her shoulders, leaning close.
"I can be very good at that."

She turned enough to face him.
"Funny story... so can I."
Her face was only a few small inches away from his. She tilted her head.
"Dare you."
