"Is something wrong?"

"Why do you think I'd regret it? I'm the one who proposed to you."

"True enough."

"And I'm probably the one who likes the idea of marriage more... did I ever tell you about the pretend marriage I had in school?"
He bit a hangnail and then made a little pained noise when it ripped, leaving his finger bleeding.

Adrian automatically took Adrien's hand and dabbed away the tiny bit of blood.
"No, you didn't."

"Well, some other boys didn't like me very much and they liked to humiliate me, and one day they dragged me into a house and put somebody's sister's clothes on me and pulled me outside so that other kids would laugh at me, but I was kind of confused because it didn't bother me, so they tried picking on me again, and then the sister and her friends came over and told them to leave me alone, and took me into the house to change my clothes, but I didn't want to change clothes and she said that was all right. Then one of the other girls said we should have a pretend marriage, so she pretended to be the groom and we got married. Except when we would have kissed, we put our hands up, and kissed the back of them instead."

"I see."
He was vaguely alarmed by this.
"I don't have any equivalent stories."

"I didn't think so. I don't think you'd be easy to bully. I picture you in a sailor suit and glaring at anybody who tried until they gave up."
He thought a while, then added hesitantly: "It was easy to do to me - I was shy and I didn't speak much, and I don't think I was very good at it, and I cried easily, and I cried especially when people made fun of maman - which other boys did a lot. She was pretty, but she'd never been married, and she had a son, so there was a lot a bully could go on."
The thought of anybody calling Lucie Baillon a whore was shocking enough in itself - nevermind the verity of the statement.

Adrian crossed his arms over him.
"I won't tell you about my parents."

He briefly felt a great deal of anxiety over this, fretting that Adrian needed to tell him about it, but then relief washed over him.
"Thank you."

"I will, however, mention that I did play at being married exactly once as a child."

Adrian sighed.
"I was four years old. It was as exciting as you'd imagine."

"I didn't know other kids my age when I was four. I lived at the sorority."
He looked backwards and up at Adrian, almost solemn-looking. "I can't imagine it."

"Her family had a dog; we squeezed into the dog house. That's all, really."
