It took a lot of effort to even let go of Adrien, let alone leave him alone in the room while Adrian disposed of the remains of the previous night's picnic (a few sad little glass cups with wax in the bottom and some boxes that had contained more food until Bubastis found them unattended and decided to amend that).
He made a few phone calls to a handful of design houses that he had business contact with via Veidt Enterprises' production of textiles and cloned furs to ask if they had any sample items still lying around that might fit Adrien's measurements, and after being reassuring them that he didn't mind the price one of them agreed to send four dresses and a pair of shoes to the house. Adrian already had a check ready, and after the person doing the delivering had left, he carried the items upstairs and laid them out for Adrien to find upon waking.
When all this was done, Adrian went back to where Adrien was still asleep and studied him for a moment.
Last night shouldn't have been a relief. He should have been horrified by Adrien's reaction, and he knew it, but the fact that this meant that there was even the slightest chance that Adrien would understand what he had to do...
In spite of himself, Adrian was happy. For the first time, there was the vaguest glimmer of hope that this would last, that this part of their life didn't come with a built-in expiration date. A lasting measure of comfort for once, to inaugurate his new world. It was like a-
No. He didn't believe in signs.
Adrian lightly pushed Adrien's dark golden hair away from the boy's tear-swollen, long-lashed sleeping eyes, and bent to kiss him, before leaving him to continue sleeping in peace.
