Evie figured she had better own up to what she had told her father last night. She had to fake a relationship with Olivier, without letting him know she was faking it, but without him suspecting she didn't like him in That Way so her parents would buy it. Her mother likely would have understood, but she didn't want to come between her parents--they fought enough about stupid things on their own. She had no idea how they'd react to something it was reasonable to fight about.
There was also that pesky fluttery feeling she got every time she thought about Laurent.
Damn it.
So she hopped on a horse, sidesaddle like a lady, and rode over to the Desmarais' house to knock on the door.

One of the many maids of the house answered the door, smiling when she recognized Evie.
"Hello, Miss! So nice to see you again." She said, opening the door and stepping aside so that Evie could come in.
"The sirs are both about on the grounds."
There...had been a bit of gossip, for all that the head servant woman had tried to block it. It helped, though, that two of the people the servants had been discussing were people that they had no problems with--Evie being one.

She stepped in, smiling in thanks.
Oh, lord... so now they knew she was here about one or the other of them. Clearly there'd been gossip. Awesome. She'd forgotten what it was like--having a houseful of servants whose job was to do what you wanted, and whose passion was to talk about what you did.
"Would you happen to know which direction Monsieur Olivier went? Or will they be back soon, do you think?"

"Oh, yes," the woman said brightly. She was a bit new and rather eager to please, for the time being.
"The Comte is currently in the library."

Evie smiled.
"Well then I'd be glad to see him."

It didn't take long--Olivier tried to make himself easy to reach when he was abroad, in the city, or at home. Thus, he usually chose a location central to the house when he wasn't out, and from the foyer to the library was mostly a straight shot.
He was sitting on one of the couches, intent on the book in his hands, when the servant girl and Evie came in.
"Monsieur, you have a visitor--"
Before the girl could finish, however, Olivier had gotten to his feet, a smile on his face.
"Evie! So glad to see you."

She smiled brightly, feeling like a piece of shit.
It was only until the end of the summer.
"You as well, Olivier; how are you?"

"Wonderful," he said, walking over to her and kissing the back of her hand.
"And it's wonderful of you to come."
He was a bit hestiant, recalling on incident with Laurent, but Olivier had not given up on Evie--he felt, perhaps not quite true love yet, but enough so that he wouldn't let it go without resistance.
"Please, sit down."
In the background, the servant girl retreated out the library doors.

She did so with grace.
"Actually," she said, with a little touch of fake shyness, which made her feel terrible all over again, "I was coming to invite you to dinner tomorrow."

He brightened, and it was as if the clouds had moved away from the sun.
"I would love to! It's been a while since the last such gathering, and it would be wonderful to at last meet the rest of the Bass family."
Rumors be damned, Olivier, when it came to others on the scene was what Laurent derisively referred to as "the welcome wagon".
Even if said family being welcomed had been around for ages.

Oh, he was so cute when he did that. It made her feel like she was kicking a puppy in the face.
As it was, she just smiled gratefully and weighed the possibility of her father not saying anything about her outing last night with "Olivier." Or, well, who he believed to be Olivier. If he said anything her lie would be obvious and then this whole thing would come crashing down around her ears.
Her mother would probably bother the truth out of her eventually, and Wes didn't care one way or the other.
"Well Wes is probably going to avoid dinner like the plague--he's a bit antisocial--but my parents will be happy to have you."

"Oh, it's all right if he doesn't want to come--I wouldn't put pressure on him to do so. But I'm glad that your parents would want to meet me."
Excitement was slowly building in him--for it was him, not Laurent, who was being invited to this.
"Ah! When is the dinner?"

"Seven," she informed him, brushing a stray hair back behind an ear. She was either coming off as awkward or endearingly shy. Probably awkward.
