Adrian forced himself to laugh.
"I don't see how an assault on my person has anything to do with the mask community at large. It's not as though I don't have other enemies."

"It's not just that, at least here, there's been attacks on both big named capes and small times. It's not normal 'get rid of that guy and we'll be able to do anything we want' they were all well thought out plans. All from different sources though, but they've got to be connected somehow right?"

"An unfortunate trend, more likely than anything genuinely related."

Dan didn't say anything for a moment, before replying.
"But how do you know?"

"The whole world's going mad. The spike in violence can be directly correlated to the spike in the likelihood of nuclear war. People aren't thinking clearly."
His voice was more solemn now. He picked up the portrait of Adrien on his desk and thumbed the edge, very gently.
"There was a man who killed his loved ones very recently to save them from having to see the worst of it," he said. "There's been more gang violence in the past few months targeted toward civilians as well as more prominent people, you know that. And if masks are seen as symbols of an impotent authority... well, I will admit that there could be a vague psychological motivation to the choice of costumed heroes as specific targets, but that's a symptom of a larger disease of society. Does that make sense?"
He set the picture down and quietly pulled out a small red book, almost more like a pamphlet, and set it aside on his desk, very deliberately.

Dan sighed, knowing this conversation would get here eventually.
He'd been trying desperately not to think about it.
"Yea I-I'd heard about that, tragic" he replied, shifting his phone to the other ear, suddenly at a loss for things to say.
His mind was now trying to make sure what he was doing, was right.

"And what Rorschach fails to see is that this is all just part of a greater pattern. It figures, misanthrope that he is, that he wouldn't really notice anything until it entered his own backyard..."

"Truth be told, I don't even know how he got to Paris" Dan replied not really hearing Adrian's statement.

"It's probably a sordid story involving cargo ships and a few third-degree burns," he said dryly.
