There hadn't been many visitors today, and Johanna had just left to go read a book, leaving Aimée alone waiting for any more who might come.
A few days previously, Sébastien (or Henri Sébastien, or Henri, or whatever he was called now) had informed her he had met a piano teacher and given him the house address and told him to call today so she could talk to him. Monsieur Girard's departure had been disappointing, as he had been a very talented piano-player. Now she awaited his arrival, specifically.

Vardalek was always neatly dressed, if somewhat eccentrically. Some articles of his clothing had a foreign, slightly Oriental flavor to them, but these things happened when you dressed to impress on one's employers a certain image. Or future employers, for that matter.
He knocked discreetly, and then waited patiently with cane in hand.

The butler answered the door and ushered the man to the drawing room, where Aimee rose to greet him. She dipped into an elegant curtsey, years of social events having eventually forced her to get the hang of it.
"You must be Count Vardalek?"

He nodded, eyes discreetly lowered, before affecting a proper bow. On straightening, he couldn't help himself, eyes lazily assessing the house's layout.
"And you are the Baroness? It's a pleasure to meet you."

"You as well; please do sit down." She gestured to a chair and sat in one nearby.

He took a seat with a very affected kind of formalness, as if his desire to be polite and courteous was doing battle with sheer exhaustion. Folding his hands, he gave his host a proper look.
"Thank you kindly. I am here regarding the possibility of..." There was a meaningful pause. "Employment, as your son's piano teacher. It would be a great honor to tutor young Henri."
Henri appeared six-or-seventeen and in full blossom, probably in no need of an instructor for much longer, but he was a charming young man. It would be a pleasure to fully make his acquaintance. But for now, he was posing as a slightly shabby fallen nobleman, with a lingering trace of the Slavic in his voice.

"Yes, I assume he told you about Monsieur Girard's departure." She had already interviewed a few teachers, but none of them had impressed her on the piano. "As Séb-- Henri is the only one of my children who still shows interest in music, I've held his tutors to a high standard. Do you have references?"
Her tone was businesslike, but not brusque. As always, she was very genuine.

He smiled sadly, nodding.
"I can provide you several, but I'm afraid few of them are from families in France. That won't be an issue, will it?"

"No, that's fine." She just hoped they were in a language she spoke. "How are you enjoying Paris, Monsieur le Comte?"

"Very well. I'm finding the climate very agreeable."
And the populace more than obliging. Such a lively city, and it hadn't yet rejected him like a foreign body in a wound. He resisted the temptation to toy with his cane.

She smiled.
"Have you been to the opera, or the symphony? Both are exceptional."

"I'm afraid I haven't had the chance to fully enjoy either. Simply finding accommodations has been difficult, though when the opportunity presents itself..."
He made an expressive gesture. "Paris is known for its opera house, is it not?"

"Yes, it's quite famous. Up with La Scala in Milan. My husband and I have a box; we go to all of the performances."

"Oh, how lovely. When I have the chance in the course of my travels, I try to support the local arts."
He tapped out a pattern on the armrest with his spidery fingers, absently.

"Would you like to play something?" She gestured delicately to the piano on the other side of the room.
