He gave her a smile then stood up... or rather, tried. His mind was sharp but his body had been laying in a hospital bed for weeks and his wounds hadn't healed enough. There was no way he was going to make it clear across town alone not matter how much he wanted to.
"On second thought," he said, slightly embarrassed. "How about a wheelchair... and maybe you could get my driver to help?"

She bit her lip and tried not to smile.
"Right."
She hurried off to get his driver and a chair.

"And, nurse," he said, stopping her before she left.
"Did you find a piece of paper on me when they brought me in? It was folded in a little square and it had some water stains on it?"

She shook her head. "No, sir. Sorry."

Chuck couldn't hid his disappointment. But finding no real solution for it, he let the nurse go.
He didn't have to wait long before both his driver and a wheelchair both arrived at his bed side. With help from both the nurse and his driver, he left the hospital.
It was around four in the afternoon when Chuck rang the door bell to Adrienne's house. He sat there in his chair, nervously waiting for someone to answer the door.
Finally, after what seemed like ages, someone opened the door. It was a servant. He kindly showed Chuck into the sitting room where he waited yet again.

Adrienne was fetched, and knew immediately who it was. How many times had they done this now? She had lost count.
"It was the nurse, wasn't it," she inquired softly, from the doorway. She was tentative to fully enter the room.

Chuck turned his head towards her direction.
"Yeah," he said, a small hopeful smile shading his face. "I think we should collect royalties on that novel she's bound to write."

A small smile ghosted its way across her face.
"I suppose it'll have a grand, happy ending." Her voice was sad and heavy.

"Adrienne..."
He stopped himself. He couldn't say all he wanted to say from that wheelchair. He wanted to embrace her and kiss her and--
Being the irrational man that he was at the moment, Chuck tried and managed to get himself out of the chair and standing.
"Adi, I--"
But all the will in him couldn't his body up any longer than a few moments. Before he could finish his sentence, he fell back into his chair, grasping his wounds in pain.

She winced, resisting the urge to reach out and help him.
"Charles, I can't... we can't keep--"
Her eyes pleaded with him.

"--Everything you said on that letter was right," he said quickly, afraid that any delay might prompt her to make him leave. "If you and Evelyn don't want me here then I'll leave."
He took a moment to recover from the jolt of pain.
"But I just couldn't let you go without..."
Chuck broke off and sighed. He was never good at this and looked away, hoping that whatever blunder he'd make would go forgiven.
"Without telling you how sorry I am that I couldn't be a better person."
But for this bit he had to look at her.
"And that I love you. I love you so much..."
It was almost like another person sitting there: his frail appearance, his heartfelt words and his earnest tone were so unlike him. He would've normally chosen to go through some unimaginable torture rather than admit these things but this was his family. He wasn't going to let them go that easily.

Now that shocked her. It was more impressive, to her, than if he had written her name on the face of Big Ben and shouted it from the rooftops. It was more important than the fact that he'd chased her all the way to England. There was an embarrassing lump in her throat.
"I can't very well ask you to leave now." She staunchly ignored the one or two tears that managed to escape, and smiled a little.

Chuck held out his hand.
"Come here," he said softly. It sounded more like a question.

She had begun moving towards him already, and took his hand once she reached him.

He brought her down to his level and wiped her tears away.
"I don't know why it's always this way but I can't seem to learn life lessons without events with some degree of tragedy," he said, shaking his head at the ridiculousness of it all. "And I feel like I've been wandering my entire life looking for them in hopes that they'll make me a better human being despite the pain..."
"But I don't want to do that anymore," he whispered, exhausted. "I want to be here."
Chuck gently squeezed her hand.
"I want to be home."
