"...you didn't turn her, though. I did."

The count made a face.
"Please, don't remind me. It was terrible enough to live through the first time." His Belle, so motionless, so close to true death...

"And she had me do it for- for you-"

"Wanting to live or at least not die is a very human thing... nothing to do with me," the count mumbled, letting himself drop into a nearby chair.
"She's far too good for me... how can I make her my wife while I know that?"

"She only asked for it because she wanted to stay with you!" Herbert objected.

"Great, so being with me is better than certain death," the count grumbled.
It was new though, in a way, for most women being with him had pretty much equaled certain death.

"You're being silly," said Herbert, crossing his arms.

"Am I, Herbert? Think, why would she possibly choose me over realizing her potential? There are better men in this world and frankly, Belle can do pretty much anything she puts her mind to without ever needing a man! She's smart, sophisticated, beautiful, well-read, loving and caring... she's perfect."
Here the count hung his head and heaved a deep, deep sigh.
"And I am far from perfect."

"And she chose you," Herbert said pointedly, kneeling beside the chair.

"Maybe she's not that smart after all, then," the count replied with something best described as half a laugh.

Herbert lowered his eyes.
"Vati... you don't really want to call it off, do you?"

The count looked up to meet his son's gaze.
"No... I'm about to marry the love of my undeath, the greatest woman I've met since your mother... of course I don't really want to call it off. It's just, if it's better for her... I'd do anything for Belle. Even if it means being unhappy myself."

Herbert smiled, then hugged.

The hug took the count slightly by surprise, but it was welcome nevertheless and after an initial moment of recovery he wrapped his arms around Herbert and pulled his son close.
"I love you, my boy..." he whispered, soft but very sincere.

"I love you too, Vati," Herbert murmured. "I'm going to miss you so much-"
